Thumb break or tension screw?

Got a question for everyone. Due to Ohio's CCW law, I will be keeping my revolver in a locked glove box while driving and it will be placed in a belt holster at my destination. The revolver will be holstered and un-holstered several times a day. Holster will be at the 4 o'clock position. Which seems to be the more practical method to retain the revolver in the holster and still achieve smooth holstering and unholstering? Thanks for any advice.

It seems more like you should be using a paddle holster.

Tension screw will make reholstering easier and less obvious as you won't have to locate and get the thumb break clear. Also, one less thing to get hooked in the trigger guard while holstering reducing the chances of a ND.

YMMV and all that :)

That was why I suggested a paddle holster...you just take the whole holster off and put it back on. Can't ND if you aren't manipulating the trigger...

Good point Wedge. Leaving the gun in the holster would be good. Particularly if you can rig something where you can draw from it while it's in the vehicle.

I've recently discovered paddle holsters. I think they're a better idea.

Just as long as you don't mix 'em up, and use a thumb-screw or a tension break...

A paddle holster WITH a thumb break.

That way the gun STAYS PUT when you take it off and put it on.

Just get this: http://www.blade-tech.com/frontend?command=ProductMatrix&iProductId=2951&iSectionId=4368

I've used one almost everyday for two years. The belt snaps make for easy on and off, it's very comfortable, and like all IWB holsters it's great for concealment. However, being kydex you won't sweat through it like leather, and you can adjust the tension screws to your tastes.

I am going to be seated in the car while trying to reholster this revolver. That will be and has been challenge enough with a jacket on, without anyone seeing what I am trying to do, etc. I think a paddle holster will make things even worse. Instead of reholstering a revolver I am going to have to try and side a whole rig on and position while seated and wearing a jacket. Also, IWB is out as is pocket carry.

So if you had to reholster and unholster your gun seated in a car and still worry about retention when walking around using a OWB, would you use a thumb break or a tension screw? Does the tension screw make things difficult to reholster 10-25 times a day? I am thinking a thumb break is going to be a big pain but don't have any experience with tension screws.

kjaniak:

no sweat with the paddle in the car whilst seated. Just slide it around to your back for easy off where the pants waist will be looser and for easy on insert at back and slide to side.

I face the same issues daily with dropping the kids at school, going into the office, doing errands on the road, it is very versatile. My second option esp. when I am going to really be up and about for the day is ankle carry..

go for one with a tension screw that gives a consistent pull..

I use neither, just a molded leather holster. Sometimes I take the whole holster off with the gun in it like when I go to class (can't carry in schools in SC). I keep a cheap ($7) Uncle Mike's nylon holster in the glove box so the gun doesn't get too beat up while it's in there. As long as you check the cars next to you, re/unholstering in a car is no big deal...I do it all the time. Tinted windows help, too. Anything with a tension screw (well, the ones I've seen anyway) will probably cause more wear on the finish than a thumb break, especially if it's kydex.

IWB - just take the whole holster out and into the glove box. Same idea as a paddle holster, but the pants coming away from your body makes the bulge less obvious.
