Would it be possible to put a 7 shot cylinder from a 686+ into a 681 frame? Would the timing be too screwed up for this to work?

I think the original 681 frame would be slightly too small for the cylinder, as the 7-shot cylinder has a slightly larger diameter than the 6-shot: but I couldn't say for sure. You'd certainly have to replace the entire timing mechanism as well as the cylinder, even if the latter would fit, and this might require frame modifications.

If it's the fixed sight that grab you, it would be easier to install the fixed service sights available for the adjustable-sight Smiths. They replace the original sights and give you a Novak-type sight picture.

Gheezeee.... 3 moderators and they don't know
Yep sure would... call this guy. I have already talked to him about doing the same thing and he said a cylinder fit is around $50 and a new cylinder from S&W is Part # D7 215520000 and shows with a list price of $128.42 If you get all of the extractor goodies it will be easier to swap the cylinders.

This would probably be one of the only guns I would have with a 7 shot cylinder. I prefer the K frame and 6 shots. But IF I ever found my self with a 681 I would do this in a heart beat. I would also have the barrel half lugged at the time or get one of the 5" half luggers and have the front sight lowered to POI?POA.

I agree Brian--a 7 shot model 65 would be phenomenal! I figure the next best thing would be a 681. A local shop has some--4" police trades in the $250 range. I'm just dreaming at this point but I'll file the info for use (hopefully!) later.

Thanks again to all who responded.

I went the other way.
I had S&W put a 6-shot cylinder in a 686+ so I could shoot it at IDPA SSR.
I would cheerfully sell you the 7-shot cylinder but it is cut for moon clips with NO original rear face left for loose ammo, it has to have the clips. (Why did I let Charlie Prest talk me into that?)
