How big does the 30.06 sign have to be in order to be valid? My understanding is that state law requires it to be almost 2' x 3', given the size of the letters, borders, etc.

I ask because I'd like to enter a place that has what appears to be the correct 30.06 language on a sign. However, the sign looks to be only about 18" x 18". (And if the sign is too small, I certainly won't be pointing that out to anyone).

The specifics can be found in Section 30.06 of the little whilte law book that came in your application packet from DPS. I think it requires minimum 1" letters in both English and Spanish. I don't think I would care to finance a test case related to going beyond a sign as close as what you describe.

Well, there's no requirement for borders of any kind, only that the sign be in English and Spanish, and that the letters be 1 in. tall, and contrast with the sign. I've never seen one, even issued by DPS that was 2x3 feet, unless you mean for both languages. I would think that, depending on the sign, 18x18 would do it.

Penal Code Ch. 30.06 (http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/pe/pe0003000.html#pe006.30.06)

That being said, be careful if you decide to push these finer points of the law.

Out of curiosity, where is the sign? PM me if you like.
YMMV

Legit. signs are pretty few and far between. Am curious too. On what type of building?

Does anybody have a picture of what this sign actually looks like?

This text must be on the sign in English AND Spanish with letters being at least one inch high:Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (trespass by holder of license to carry a concealed handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (concealed handgun law), may not enter this property with a concealed handgun. Now, that's just English, and when you shove everything on a sign, it requires about 623 square inches, or a sign about 40.7" x 15.3".

In other words, boys and girls, you are NOT going to miss one if it complies with the law.

I've never seen one.

Thanks, all, for your responses. FYI, the building in question is a community center in a large city (pick one of the 4). And, in the interest of total honesty, I actually did enter the building carrying. I saw the sign, and thought that it didn't meet the standard. Of course, I was a bit stupid for doing this (I should have been SURE), but no harm was done.

Blackhawk, thanks much for the actual text of the law. Now I don't have to get off my lazy butt tonight to look it up... and, BTW, there isn't any Spanish on this particular sign. I surely won't be telling these morons, and will carry in this building with total confidence in the future.

FYI, I've only seen one valid 30.06 sign, located at a hospital.

Last legit sign I saw was at Market Hall gun show in Dallas.

(I don't like disarming, but understand and agree with the reasoning of Dallas Arms Collectors Assn. Good friend in charge of security there. His and buds' .357 Sigs definitely hot. :) )

Sam - The sign MAY be coming down Sept. 1. See "state legislative" forum or seach other recent posts here regarding H.B. 878. Authored by Rep. Suzanna Hupp - a great lady!

Don't feel lonesome on going in city building. I know someone who did the same thing once. ;)

Edited to add: CHL instructor here. The way DPS lawyer put it to us: "I'm not saying that you can't be prosecuted; you just can't be prosecuted successfully."

Greybeard - thanks for the info. I look forward to Hupp's bill passing. If there are any terrorist incidents here after we go into Iraq (and I hope that there aren't), then this bill will pass more quickly and with less opposition.

Blackhawk, I have seen several in Saint Tony's, mostly in the touristy areas. The biggest one was at the Applebee's just off 410 by the airport by the Hampton Inn where I stay before flying out.

I see a lot of non-.30-'06-compliant signs. I assume these are "wild weasels" or "chaff" for the socccermommies. While walking to the Mercado thingy I have seen a lot of "No Guns" signs in windows of shops near there and in the market itself. I took photos but need Mrs. Flory to help me post them.

I'll scout out Austin in a couple of weeks. Oh, God, please let me leave!

I see fewer and fewer every time I go down. I would assume that business owners, after hearing so much rubbish about "blood in the streets" and "the Old West", finally realized that tripe was so much soccermommie silliness.

Maybe a bunch of CHL holders should show up in front of that Applebee's with a big camera, microwave truck, reporters, etc., and take a picture of the sign. When the manager comes out to invite them in, they can tell him thanks, but they're not welcome at Applebee's.

As far as Austin goes, Bergstrom Airport has mostly-legal ones (does 'transparent' count as a color?), a few businesses around west campus have bona-fide signs, and city buildings are pulling the whole 30.05 crap. Other than that there are a few non-compliant ones here and there, but not too many of those either.:)
