Here is a pair of early 1930's Colt Officers Models with what I believe are Roper grips. The upper is a .22 made in 1933 and the lower a .38 made in 1930. The bottom of each panel of each grip is marked "M 10."

The grips could be the work of Lew Sanderson who followed Roper, but I think your are right. You have a fine brace of revolvers there.

My reference as to their being Roper's was a thread with pictures from the S&W Forum:

Lew Sanderson learned from, and somethimes used styles and checkering patterns that were similar to those of Roper. It is sometime difficult to tell the difference between the two - particularly from a photograph. However lacking any evidence to show otherwise I will say you are probably right and the grips were made by Roper. Anyway you couldn't go wrong either way.

Remove the grips and look inside. If both of the grips are marked with the same number and there is a small round indentation (from holding block) then the grips are probably the work of Lew Sanderson. I have 3 sets of his grips, one on a Colt Woodsman Match Target, one on a Colt Officers Model .22 and a left hand set that I believe are for a Woodsman 3rd model. All three are marked inside as described above. The grips on the Officers Model are marked with a "5". I don't know if it is a carving sequence or a model number.

areaguy, did you notice that you were advising on a question that fell out of discussion seven years ago?

Why don't you start another thread and post some pics of your sets of grips. I'm sure they are beautiful!
