Well, I've decided to make the jump...

Looks like a decent tax refund is in my future, so I've decided this year to put the money down on a good carry piece, and the class and CCW permit itself. I've been thinking and talking to my roommate about doing it for a while now, so it's time to make the jump...

Congratulations and good for you! There's a fundamental comfort in learning how to take care of yourself and having the means for personal security at hand. Don't stop your training at just a CCW class, and practice is an ongoing thing (the good news is, it's fun).
You're in a good place to pursue your goal, as I'm sure you've noticed, there's no shortage of opinions on most anything here, and there's lots of knowledge and good advice available for the asking. Take care, and may the Eagle fly soon and in a bountful manner for you :D

Congrats on getting money back from Uncle Sam. I am looking forward to getting some of my money back from the fed.
I noticed that you are in Raleigh maybe you have already been there, but if I were you I would check out Personal Defense & Handgun Safety Center (http://www.pdhsc.com/). They are great people to deal with and have some great deals on handguns. They also offer CCW traing and have an indoor range. I recently bought a Springfield XD from them. They had by far one of the best prices in the whole country. While you are there ask and see if they have a range XD that you could try. I have been very happy with my XD and plan to purchase the sub XD as a carry piece.
Good Luck

this is the type statement/opinion i love to hear. all law abiding citizens should be packing. i, for one, would feel much safer than handling threats on my own. BGs would be scarce if i and forty others on the street were carrying. thank you for doing this. and - - practice. use ear and eye protection.

Yep, I've got a Ruger P94 I bought from them. They're very close to where I live, and I prefer their indoor range to Davi's across town. I'm definitely going to buy a carry piece of some kind- that P94 is a bit too big and heavy to carry anytime but winter. Anyway, the XD SC is on my short list, along with a G26, though I'm leaning towards getting something even smaller like a Keltec P11 or Kahr PM9 that I can pocket carry. I'll have to handle some of these and see where I lean after that...
Probably get a membership at PDHSC, too, if I can get them to give me the $100 "active military" rate. Problem is, I'm not exactly active, but I ain't exactly inactive reserve either- I'm in Navy ROTC. So I'll have to see what they'll do...
