I have wanted to get a 1911 for awhile now and i have finaly saved enough for another gun purchase. I was leaning towards maybe a Springfield G.I model to start with but i have some worries regarding corrosion resistance and reliabilty. It seems like every time im about to purchase one i scare myself out of it and end up getting a Glock or a CZ. I have 700.00 to spend and i want to make sure i get the most bang for my buck. I would really hate to have to buy another european pistol, i need something that is reliable,American and just says woop ass.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

YOu can get a decent gun for $700. I'd prefer not getting a GI model because I don;t like the grip safety shape or sights, but the more doodads you add to a 1911 and deviate from the original design, the less reliable they can be.

If you want made in America you best get a Colt because the Springfield isn't.

Move up to the Mil-Spec instead of the GI, you will not regret either but I prefer the Mil-Spec it has a few more mods than the GI. It has larger sights the magwell is beveled and ejection port has been lowered. Below is a link to a recent review of one by Mr Camp.

Do you want a base gun that you can add onto later on? If so, either the SA Milspec or the Colt NRM 1991 are the best bets.
Or do you want a pistol with a few bells and whistles already added on? Certain features I'd consider must-haves on a 1911 are Novak sights and a beavertail grip safety. Having these installed later might also mean having to refinish the pistol (more $$$). The Springfield Loaded and Kimber Custom II offer these features and more at a good price. I'd at least take a look at both (although I'm not really high on Kimber's, personally).
Have you dropped by www.1911forum.com yet? Lots of good info there. Good luck. :)

You could consider stainless for corrosion resistance, otherwise parkerizing is probably the next best thing. The new Colt's, if you can find them, seem to be very well made. Colt offers two finishes, blued carbon steel and stainless steel.

I have recently spoken with several people who were mainly interested in the Springfield GI models mainly due to the low price.
DOH!
