WalMart doesn't make guns ... you already said the gun was a Ruger, so I don't imagine the Rugers at WalMart are any crappier then any other Ruger.

No matter where you buy it from, the 10/22 is a fun rifle. TONS of aftermarket parts. If the stock looks cheesy, BAM! Tons of stocks available. Don't like the trigger pull? Look up Volquartsen. Not accurate enough? Green Mountain barrel. Etc., etc.
If Wallyworld's selling it for cheap, buy it. I've seen them on sale at Big 5's (in Kali) for about $170.
Check www.rimfirecentral.com and www.ontargetguns.com for 10/22 info and parts. This is me after I bought mine and fixed it up: :D

I remember a rumor about Walmart buying sub-standard guns from the major manufacturers and selling them at reduced prices. I don't know about that, but I did buy a 10/22 at Walmart at a great price ($159) several years ago, and have never had a problem with it. It did have that ugly Ruger synthetic stock, which I switched out quick. Also added a target hammer.

I say vote with your money. If Wal-Mart sells the 10/22 cheaper than local FFLs, then buy if from them.

It's possible that in the quality control inspections, marginally okay stuff is set aside for sale to the big chainstores. Possible, not necessarily likely. One thing for sure, you can find all manner of nonsensical statements on the Internet.
I wouldn't worry about it. First off, there's too much potential liability. Secondly, WalMart doesn't like dissatisfied customers, and their "Don't like it, bring it back." is pretty good.
And there's nothing that says you can't do a halfway-smart job of looking something over before buying. :) "Grab it, growl and go." is not halway-smart.

Wal-Mart is the 800 lb gorilla of the retail market. The company that I work for does business with them. The products we make for them are not seconds by any standard. They have very specific requirements for what they buy and from my experience, it is not inferior. We do not make firearms for them though. However, they do wring out most of the profit for the vender when they do buy. While they will not admit to it, they know you, as a vendor, would rather make less profit on 15,000 items sold to them, than more profit on a much smaller sale to other customers. It seems to work for them. Buying power drives the retail markets. From what I have seen of Wal-Mart, they ask firearm manufacturers to make specific versions of models of well known guns that only they sell, in that configuration. I would not hesitate to purchase a Ruger 10/22, or any other gun from them, based on the quality of their version being inferior because I don't believe they are. Other reasons might direct me to purchase my gun from another source, but not the inferior quality of their particular version, but, to each his own.

Wally world buys by the railroad car full of items, thats how they can sell cheaper.
