Church Activity

My daughter, 25, attends church in the Phoenix area with a couple of hundred other young singles. In years past she became known for planning activities that were over and above what others had come to expect. She teaches a class now instead but was approached by her church leader and asked to plan something unofficial: a jaunt into the desert involving a variety of automatic weapons that he happens to own. Participants pay for their ammo.

I've already decided I can't invite myself along even as a RSO. I can ask where were these kind of leaders when I was young. (We only got to shoot regular rifles, hand guns, and shotguns. :(

In the recent past, we have taken our young men from church out to shoot "fun" guns. Nothing full auto, but things that look like they should be. We have had to be careful because our young men's program and scouting is closely intertwined. Scouting doesn't like anything but .22's and shotguns. We capped the summer off with a paintball game, campout, and planning activity to reward the boys for working hard.

The opportunities are out there. I think local church leaders just have to be open to allowing these types of activities. It didn't hurt that we were shooting in our Bishop's backyard, and that he attended our paintball activity.

That's so fun when youth groups get to do activities like that. Very often our youth minister would put together Saturday outtings for paintball. We'd also have unofficial trips to go bird hunting. Other youth group members had land and they invite everybody out shooting for the day, plus a little bbq or swimming after.

Now that I'm out and an adult, I'm thankful for the activities that I got to do  I only wish I had those sorta easy opportunities now :o

Glad to hear your daughter is actively involved. BTW, you said you can't invite yourself along, but how about asking if she needs a RSO ;)

The church we just recently joined has alot of shooters. The pastor said that in the past they've had picnics where there's shooting afterward right on the church grounds!
also the Pastor's wife talked about how she grew up shooting with her uncle, and now when her kids come home for the holidays they always end up doing some target practice.......gotta love it..
When my wife went to sunday night service one week, the Pastor asked where I was..she said I was at my shooting league.....they talked for like 20 minutes about IDPA...the next week he cornered me and asked about what I shoot and alot about IDPA....praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.. ;)

The topic of shooting .22s with some of the older kids in our youth group was brought up at a planning session, only to be immediately dismissed by one of the youth workers who "hates guns and anything to do with them". :scrutiny:

We ended up doing it anyway, she just didn't go along. The next thing is larger rifles; we thought it might be fun to let them try a M1 carbine or maybe my M1A. We'll see what happens...

What church does she belong to? I ain't single, but even my wife would probably enjoy that kind of church (I'm definatly the more religious of the two of us). She would certainly enjoy a full-auto outing. I was gonna start church shopping this weekend, but I may change my plans for where to start if that one isn't too far from the house I'm buying.

I was raised in a Mennonite Brethren church ... so there wouldn't have been anything like that when I was a young'an :(

(for those who don't know, the Mennonite Brethren church is basically a bunch of white bread, upper middle class folk who abandoned the stricter Amishlike Mennonite doctrine of their grandparents but kept silly crap like Pacifism and Conscientious Objection :scrutiny: )

My friend and I take the college group out to the range to shoot pistols once a year. I think it almost that time again. Its fun. I get to introduce people to shooting and they get to shoot guns.
