How to Improve Fixed Sights?

Older S&W revolvers appear to have lousy fixed sights. I don't see how anyone hit anything with a 1917. I don't know if this problem exists with the 38-44 Heavy Duties or not, but the Model 58 seems to be much better.

What do people do to the older guns to make good shooters out of them? Open the rear sight channel? Replace the front blade? Both?

Dick -my long gone 1917 (in .455) - was always needing aim off ... I longed to tweak front sight but never did to avoid ruining its original spec. Mind you, that was shooting over longer distances like 20 and 25 yards. Up close and personal - I doubt it would have been too bad. :)
