Looking at Makarov.com and seeing all the add-ons for Makarov pistols, I'm wondering if it is worth it to "upgrade" a $150 pistol.

I can see the .380 barrel, but by the time you spend the money on the other stuff you have spent more on the upgrade then you did on the gun.

How many Mak owners here customize thier Maks?
Was it worth it?

My Russian - via Bulgarian import. I like this gun ''as is'' and accept it's limitations, such as they are ... not very significant. As a ''budget'' gun - seems little point for me in throwing funds at it.

Maks are great little guns.

I personally am not into customizing. If I were, however, the initial cost of the gun would not be the deciding factor in how much money to throw at it.

Suppose you find a 1911 at a yard sale for $50. Would that gun be less worth customizing than a Les Baer b/c of how little you paid for it?

I think that a gun is worth customizing if it works well, is reliable and accurate, and you want to add something to it.

If "worth" is determined by how much you could then sell it for, then most custom jobs will come out losers.

Makarovs are inexpensive, accurate and robust. They do not require a lot of customization. However, they only have about 27 parts and are easy to assemble and disassemble. This makes them easy to customize.

Is it necessary to customize?
No

Is it worthwhile in terms of resale?
No

Is it fun and easy?
Yes.

If I did get a Mak I might get the .380 barrel and maybe heavyer springs. Other then that...

I think all Maks can be improved with better sights... but I do my own, so the cost is much less than hiring it out.
