S&W 331, 332 New BUG?

A few years ago, a friend and I were discussing the perfect hideout revolver. It had to be small, obviously, but powerful enough to put somebody down without the shooter feeling damn near the same punishment. We decided a good revolver of this type would be chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum and probably be a 5 shooter to save bulk.

Yesterday I was considering what I wanted for a new BUG. Guardian, Kel-Tec, Tomcat, these were considered front-runners. Then my friend told me, "You know Smith & Wesson came out with a lightweight small-frame .32 H&R, but it's a 6 shooter."

He showed it to me out of a catalog, and I'm impressed to say the least. Now, of course, I'm torn between the guns that were holding my interest and the revolver that is slowly tearing me away from them.

Has anybody any experience with these, good or bad?

Taurus makes a comparable snub, the 731UL. It's also a six-shot .32 H&R Magnum,a dn will fit J-frame holsters. I recently acquired one for my wife. It's the second 731UL passing through my collection, and both of them had very good DA triggers out of the box. Best of all, MSRP is around $340.

.38 spcl ~200 ft/lbs x 5 shots
.32 H&R ~190 ft/lbs x 6 shots

um, that msrp on the taurus does look a lot nicer than the smiths i must admit. i paid $625 :what:

awww, its only money...

is the taurus sa/da?

wait a minute, is that "made in brazil" i see on the side of that piece??? uh oh...

oh, someone arounnd here posted about it being hard to be accurate with snubbies, is allllll in the trigger control, i don't care WHAT you're shooting.

;)

oh, if you have a fat hand the slide on the tomcat can and will slice the web of your hand open. if you make a fist and the flesh between the joints of your thumb and first finger creates a little rise or bump instead of a gully the tomcat is not for you. should i post a pic of the scar? i traded mine in for the p-32 and have been much happier ever since. I think the kel-tec seems to be a little more accurate than the berretta too. and definitely beats it in the weight department.

I keep a S&W 331 .32 mag on my ankle in a Galco Ankle Holster nearly every day. Weighs about 11.9 oz unloaded and holds six rounds. I figure if I get knocked down, I can draw. Other than that, unless I was sitting, I couldn't get it out very fast at all. (Very bad back~among other injuries.:( )

That is a fact. I love S&W revolvers, but the small-frame Tauri I've owned lately have had better trigger pulls out of the box than their Smith counterparts. Their fit and finish has greatly improved, to the point where I'd take a small-frame Taurus over a post-2000 J-frame most of the time.

Their Total Ti guns usually need trigger work, since those all-titanium guns usually feel more "gritty" than the alloy or steel snubs. I try to steer clear of those, since I don't think it's worth the price premium over alloy.

S&W should take note and look at Taurus' lineup...they offer very appealing carry combinations these days. The .41 Magnum and .45 Colt snubbies are great little guns, and pack an ungodly wallop for medium-frame snubbies.

Sweet looking Taurus! How much does that weigh? Maybe that's another one to throw into the mix...............

Let me put it on my wife's kitchen scale here for a second...

15.9 ounces empty, 17.9 ounces loaded. That's with the aftermarket silverwood grips, so the stock model might be an ounce or so lighter.

Why do the Tauri total Ti guns have such crappy triggers. I was out looking for a .32 mag this weekend and found a Taurus UL and Ti 731 side by side within $10.00 of each other! The trigger on the UL was buttery smooth, but the Ti gun seemed to bind, especially on the return it was as lendsringer said "gritty". Will that smooth out, or is it something you should stay away from? I love the matte gray finish on the total Ti's. I really want an older S&W 342/632, but I am getting impatient. :)

Thanx
