Can a cracked frame be repaired?

The frame of my Star BM just cracked on the left side, above the slide stop hole. The gun still cycles but the magazine release has to be held in for the mag to go in properly. I am not going to fire it in its current state. Can that be fixed (welded and cleaned up), or would that be too labor-intensive or technically unrealistic?

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. George Smith at EGW could weld it up and remachine it, but just the shipping cost back and forth would cost half as much as the pistol, and that's before you pay for the repair. If you like the pistol, call J&G sales in Prescott, AZ or Southern Ohio sales and pick another one up for 130.00 and use the rest of your current pistol for spare parts as they are getting harder and harder to find.

I know Stars were only 'spot' heat-treated, but if you weld anywhere near the slide stop hole you'd need to re-heat-treat, as well. As much as it bothers me to let a gun 'die', I'd have to agree with the suggestion to replace rather than repair.

Ditto - pick up another and spare parts the original.

One more ditto - only cost effective solution.

Strip the cracked frame, weld a piece of pipe onto it, call it a prop gun and sell it on ebay. Then you'll have enough money to buy 2 Star pistols. :D

I have five magazines for it. Does anyone here need spare parts or mags? I won't replace it, because I kept it for teaching newbies...who universally preferred shooting G17 to the BM.

I'm interested in the mags if you are parting it out.

Oleg!
Demil it and turn it into a dummy gun (with a functioning trigger pull) for disarm drills and such. Such things are really useful to 1. learn what works from the POV of the 'unarmed' and 2. what is a boneheaded thing to do from the POV of the 'armed' party.
Make sure that it meets the legal definition of a non-firearm, paint it red, and convert it to a trainer.
Or, PM me about getting rid of it.
Mike
