I've recently started reading a lot at www.firearmstactical.com

which pretty much has changed a lot of what I thought about one shot stops, hollow point bullets, enegery transfer and penetration.

Anyone know any research done on the 9x18?

You might try contacting these fine folks!!

They make it. They would certainly have some ballistic data, at least!!

Thanks guys,

Hornaday had some good stuff too. They actually included the sectional density...which combined with speed is vital.

So what have you determined? Is the 9x18 a "wimpy" round, akin to the .380ACP, or is it nearly as potent (!) as the 9mm Luger?

okay the sectional density of any of the hollow point bullets is the same as the 90 grain super screamer 9x19 however at 115 gr. and beyond the density changes. It is very close to a 9x19 up to 115 gr. after which the 9mm leaves it behind.

From my readings it is paramount that a defensive round be able to penetrate at least 13 inches of ballistic gel, which a 9x18 FMJ will do but none of the hollow point ammo will.

According to goldenlokei it exceeds the 9x19 in any of the 90 to 95 gr. loadings.

Perhaps it would be wise to load staggered HP + FMJ + HP + FMJ throughout the mag for defensive loadings. The FMJ will meet the penetration for barriers or obstructed shots I.E. arms, bone, fat and skin elasticity, where as the hollow point will meet the wound channeling and tissue damage requirements.

Just a thought.

www.hipowersandhandguns.com has some good info about several different calibers including the 9x18.

As for what ammo to use for SD, I would pick between Hornadys XTP or Georgia Arms Gold Dot (this is the only company that I am aware of that loads Gold Dots). If you want penitration, then the FMJ is probably your best choice.
