Campusninja January 31, 2005, 02:26 AM I may pick up one of the new Instant Backup revolvers from Taurus, however I have a few questions. First, is it neccessary to use the Moon clips? Would this in any way harm the gun? Second, who has one and about how small is it compared to the model 85? Would you suggest this model or something else, for legal CCW? Thanks

denfoote January 31, 2005, 03:07 AM Are they even out yet???
I have not seen one!!
I carry the model 85 and it is already pocket size!!
How small do you want to go??
tarrigoni January 31, 2005, 10:05 AM Those look pretty sweet. What's the anticipated release date? Anyone know?
I may have to pick one up!
The Rabbi January 31, 2005, 10:27 AM My suggestions for it:
1) Chamber in 32H&R Magnum
2) Shrouded/concealed hammer for snag-free draw
3) Big-dot front sight or red ramp.
Otherwise a promising platform!
scbair January 31, 2005, 11:55 AM denfoote,
I haven't yet seen the specs on these "Instant Backup" revolvers, but to answer your question:
I carry a J-frame S&W (about the same size as the Taurus M85), but have also examined & handled (and even owned . . .) a couple of old S&W I-frames. The old .38 S&W I-frame ("Terrier"??) is shorter in both grip frame and length of cylinder/frame than my J-frame. If a revolver were manufactured today, using modern metallurgy and chambered for 9mm Parabellum (or even .32 H&R Magnum), I'd probably retire my current CCW as soon as I could locate & purchase one.
denfoote January 31, 2005, 02:26 PM I may be interested in it as well.
I went to the Taurus website and discovered that they are saying "available winter"!! That tells me they are still hanging fire on the release date!! I wonder if they are having ATF problems with the size?? They may not be granted an importation license due to it not garnering enough points!!
Campusninja January 31, 2005, 05:51 PM I did a search over on Gunbroker, and found one a few days ago priced at about $340. When I tried the search again yesterday, I was unable to locate the gun. I used the title of this thread as the search term. I have yet to see one in my local shops. I understand the model number is 905I, and is quite smaller than the 905.
I like to get one, if the stellar clip are not needed.
carebear January 31, 2005, 06:29 PM They're sold with the clips and the 9mm is rimless so I assume you'd need the clips. Which is a fast reload anyway.
Would overall length of the .32 Mag fit in the new shorter cylinder?
BluesBear January 31, 2005, 06:45 PM The 905 is the regular J-frame sized gun.
The 905I has the shorter cylinder/smaller frame.
Both require clips for simultanious extraction.
Black Snowman January 31, 2005, 06:57 PM It's on my wish list. The 905 has been hard enough to find, I don't imaging the 905I will be any easier.

ForGreatJustice January 31, 2005, 09:15 PM How's it stack up size wise next to the Kahr PM9? Will they make it in titanium? Definitely the 9mm backup for the money.
22luvr January 31, 2005, 09:45 PM I just checked out Taurus USA and the the "Instant backup" weighs 22.2 oz. For a gun that size that's HEAVY. My Taurus mod 605 in .357 mag didn't weigh much more than that and my mod 85 ultralite also weighed less. I'd rather have it just a little bit bigger in overall dimensions and a lot less in weight. No thanks.
carebear January 31, 2005, 10:23 PM It's in stainless, if it comes out in ultralight it'll be the heat.

Yea, my S&W steel Model 60 2 1/8" 357 is 22.5 oz. That pretty heavy for that little Taurus.
Okiecruffler February 1, 2005, 09:50 AM They have them in stock locally. Neat little gun, but I'm not sure I see the point. It's not that much smaller than a compact auto, and alot thicker. I guess if you were just sold on carying a snubby and in love with the 9mm it would be just the ticket. It is cute tho'.
Flying V February 1, 2005, 03:11 PM I just handled one at the local gun store. It is a cute little thing, and I want one.
Remarkably good DA trigger, especially for a Taurus.
