These are just a few. You can find out about more from these pages. Careful over at Jouster.com. Those guys can get tempermental sometimes and accuse everyone of being a troll if you ask the wrong question. I once questioned the practice of selling CMP rifles, and I couldn't sit for a month due to the 1st degree burns on my behind!

I have an question I'm thinking of getting an M1-Garand in from the CMP. does anyone know what grade of rifle i should get? I will be shooting this rifle, i'm not into collecting rifles. One more question, Do i have to shoot in a cmp approved match in order to get the rifle? or do I just have to shoot in any range and have the rangemaster sign a piece of paper saying I have fullfilled my shooting requirements?

I'd recommend a service grade Garand, possibly a Greek model if they have them still. The grading is based on bore condition, which is important for a lasting shooter.
The match needs to be CMP approved (per what their rules say). You can't just go out for a day at the range and get a signature.
Rules and info are www.odcmp.com Look for "rifle sales" for info. Good luck!

Hi, Luku.

I recommend you get a Service Grade Springfield from CMP - you might ask politely for a high number rifle (S/N >5,000,000) as the odds are it will be in better shape, and the higher number rifles have a reputation for better workmanship.

I bought my first CMP M1 this past August and got a rifle in the 5.9 million range, apparently still wearing the original SA barrel, with a shiny bore and sharp lands. Many other parts are HRA, but function is perfect, and I get groups around 2" x 3" with LC72 USGI ammo, which is about as well as I can expect to shoot one of these with military iron sights and ball ammo. (Maybe I was just lucky, as usually the rifle is picked at random . . . but I figured a polite request wouldn't hurt.)

You do NOT have to shoot in a sanctioned match - in my case, I used my CHL as proof of shooting activity. A match bulletin (not necessarily a high power match) with your name, or a range ticket signed off by the rangemaster, etc. will satisfy the shooting requirements, which are more lenient than in years past.

Plus of course proof of age and citizenship, membership in a CMP affiliated state organization, ability to pass the NICS check, etc. Full requirements are at the CMP website.

Service was great - two weeks to the day after sending in my paperwork and a check, my rifle was delivered.

Okay, when got my M1, the RO at my club signed off on my 50rds requirement after I shot a couple of .22 rifle sillouette matches. However, if you have a DD214 or if you're law enforcement (current or past, IIRC) or if you went through training classes that included range time, that'll stand for it.

As to which rifle to get, I got a Service Grade Danish issue back when they were still available. I like it real well. :D Now, I've been hearing real good reports of the Greek Rack Grades. While the grading system is based on the barrel's condition, some guys are getting Rack Grade Greek rifles with real good barrels. If you plan on shooting your rifle, you can't beat the $295 +shipping for a Greek RG. If you have to change it out of some beat up firewood stock, you're still money ahead with a new Boyd's walnut stock set. Regardless of what anybody tells you, unless you get collector grade which is $1400, they'll pretty much all be arsenal mixmasters.

Hank:
You got that right! I was RO for our club's highpower rifle competition (DCM/NRA) for a lot of years back when you had to shoot 3 National Match courses to qualify for a DCM (now CMP) rifle.

Had a fellow tell me he had just ordered his rifle after completing the required matches. He was very enthusiastic and told me he "told them he was going to use the rifle to compete in NM shooting, so would really appreciate receiving a match grade rifle," I hid my chuckle, but lo and behold, about nine months to a year later (that was the normal delivery time back then), this young man showed up at a match proudly showing us his "new" rifle complete w/NM stamped on op-rod and barrel.

Darn! Why didn't I ask? All they could have done is say no.

Regards,
hps

FYI - The shooting requirement can be waived if you have a C&R FFL as well.
