Hello everyone!

How many of you have seen the classic zombie movie "Night of the Living Dead"? or any other shambling horror/zombie movie for that matter?

Anyhoo, the question of the day is if you and a few friends were stranded in a desserted rural area with no fuel for your vehicle and no guns, what non-firearm weapons/devices would you like to have to defend yourself against the undead hordes? (also assume that like in the film, some abandoned house can be used for shelter but unlike the film, it has no guns inside.)

I realise that this has no bearing on reality but I figure that if a serious riot (i.e a racial violence) sweeps through your residential area, escape is not possible and the cops are ineffective then some of the measures/solutions to the fantasy situation above might be used.

I'm still trying to process the "no firearms" statement. How could there not be firearms if I'm around?

As for me, just give me the arms and armor depicted in the attachment below.

Relax El Tejon, I'll post a similar thread in the shotgun section of THR.

If I couldnt have a Flamethrower and sufficent fuel/compressed air... Then I want one of those curved, double-pointed Klingon battle sword thingies. I think its called a bat'leth. And some Claymore mines and a couple of clackers and some det cord and a good tomahawk and a team of good combat engineers to build some fortifications.

A good Asian-style sword. Most of you would call it a katana. And a solid knife as a back-up, just in case. Maybe one of those new Ka-Bars...

IRONFIST-
Good call on the bat'leth. Any idea where you could get one of those?

A tank...to get the hell out of there protected while leaving a trail of flattened zombies.

If not that, a bunch of grenades and a long sword of some kind.

And, if I don't stand a chance, a cyanide pill is a better death than being slowly chomped on by the undead. Yuck!

What? Mid Evil Screwheads! Listen up! If I can't have my BOOMSTICK (shop smart, shop S MART!) then the only way to fight Deadites is with a CHAINSAW. I just attach mine to the stump where my hand used to be. (It turned evil, I had to chop it off).

:p

Justin! Hey, Justin!! You rang?:)

Honestly, in a zombie scenario of no fuel and no guns, I'd probably be toast, but I'll give it the ol' college try.

Offensively, the first thing on my list would be to dig up stuff that's flammable: high-proof liquor, cleaning supplies, etc. With that I'd put together molotov cocktails. Even a can of hairspray and a lighter would be better than nothing.

From there, I'd look for any sort of ranged weapon, bow and arrow (and hopefully the fellow who knows how to use it!), cross bow, maybe a hunting slingshot.

After that, things that are long and pointy, or long and blunt- fireplace poker, spear, sledge hammer, baseball bat, crowbar.

Last ditch would be things like combat knives, kitchen knives, really long screwdrivers, and hammers.

If you could figure out how to rig a pressure-washer to be mobile, you'd probably have a good zombie weapon.

Assuming we're using the George Romero rules for killing zombies, I would try to avoid as much hand-to-hand or close quarters stuff as possible. In the Romero movies, the only way to kill a zombie is through head trauma. The reverse isn't true, one bite from a zombie and you're toast, no matter where he bit you.

Which brings me to the next part:
Defensive stuff.

I think CWL hit it on the head, full-out motorcycling gear would probably afford the best protection with the least amount of extra weight.

A Surefire flashlight or three couldn't hurt, as they could be used to temporarily blind the zombies while you run away.

Which leads me to the best tools you have for fighting zombies:

You're faster than they are. They just shamble about slowly and are really only dangerous in large numbers or enclosed spaces. Keep your distance, and don't go exploring the dark catacombs where the good doctor keeps his specimens for experimentation, and you'll probably be ok.

You're smarter than they are. Use your noggin! It's not a real good idea to try to kill them all, because they probably outnumber you 4,000/1.

Ok, so now is it blatantly evident that I not only love zombie movies, but have a really overactive imagination as well?:what:

BTW, Danny Boyle, director of 'Trainspotting' and 'A Life Less Ordinary' has a new movie out that deals with a scenario very similar to this, it's called '28 Days Later' and deals with people in (Gun-free) London who are forced to deal with a situation in which a plague has rendered most of the populace to a zombie-like state. (Apparently they move fast, and aren't 'dead' in the traditional Romero sense.) I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know if it's any good.

Also, George Romero, the original king of the zombie movie is currently shopping around a script for a new flick called 'Dead Reckoning.'
