I recently bought a Mossberg 500a shotgun from AG guns here in MA, and I can't for the life of me find a # on it. Did I buy a pre-68 (or whatever year) shotgun, and is it legal?

Anyone at all? I don't want this thing on my hands if it's not legal.

Does it have a side-saddle? I know it seems like a stupid question, but the side-saddle covers the serial number on my 590.

Nope. It's absolutely stock. No scratch marks or anything like that, either.

I have a digital camera, actually. If pictures of any particular area would help, do tell.

Does your FA-10 form show a serial number?

On my 500, the serial number is on the left side just above the slide release.

serial numbers were not required until after the 1968 gun control act

Nope, no # on the registration form either... I guess I have a pre-68 shotgun. I thought it was MUCH younger than that!

I'm happy to have an older example, then!

You didn't indicate if this shotgun was purchased as a new or used gun ...

Anyway, the model 500 was introduced in 1962. In 1973 they changed from walnut to a hardwood(?) stock. Maybe this will help identify its age.

Purchased used, and with a nice walnut (although cheaply laquered) stock.

Given the circumstances, I think you have a pre-serial number model 500, and enough evidence to support the contention. Do enjoy your new (used) gun. :D

I have about 5 pistols that don't have a serial. They have factory numbers that all match but no serial number. Most places will take those numbers and put that down as the serial.

Congrads, you have a "freedom" gun :).
