Hello, this is my first post on this board and I was wondering If anyone here would know the answer to this question. I recently purchased a new remington 870 marine magnum. As this is my first shotgun, I am still learning the mechanics of the gun. There is a strange noise when I tilt the gun back and forth, almost sounds like something rolling around inside the stock, but I can't really seem to tell exactly, sounds like theres a ball bearing in there or something. Is this normal for an 870, or should I attempt to disassemble the firearm in order to diagnose this problem. Just wondering If this was a common occurence. Thanks for any input.

What you're hearing is a small washer on the stock's attaching bolt.
Apparently this washer is used by the factory to hold the larger washers that are on the stock bolt in place during assembly.

To correct the racket, use a thin-bladed phillips screw driver to remove the butt pad. With the butt pad off, unscrew the large stock bolt. On the bolt is a large washer, a smaller friction washer, and below them a very small "star" washer.
It's the "star" washer that's sliding back and forth.

Either remove it entirely, or better, lightly tap the "teeth" to tighten the fit on the bolt so it can't slide around.

It's completely harmless. It's just a tiny washer sliding up and down the stock bolt screw.

The Marine Magnum that followed me home tonight is doing that exact same thing----thought I was going nuts hearing things until I read this thread------lol.

I'll take care of the offending washer after a good nights sleep.

BTW---my new home protector will be taking up residence near the bed from now on.
