I have a SIG 229 in 9mm. Questions for the SIG folks (as I am new to them. Love them BTW.)

Will a 229 mag in .40 S&W work with 9mm rounds?

Will a 228 mag fit the 229 flush with the base AND not rattle around (since the 229 is slightly larger in the mag well)? (all in 9mm)

Thanks for the replies.

I have used P228 mags in my P229 lots of times and haven't noticed any rattle or protrusion problems.

228 and 229 9mm magazines should be interchangeable. As far as I know, the only difference in the two models is the material the slides are made of.

A 229 .40S&W magazine will not work in a 229 9mm though. Well, they might work, but they won't be reliable. ;)

I do not believe there are any differences, other than the markings, between the P228 mags and the P229 9x19 mags. I have, and have used, some P229 standard capacity 9x19 mags in P228s with zero issues.

The .40 S&W mag is a little wider than the 9mm mag and won't fit. If you're looking for more rounds, MecGar makes a 15 rounder that fits flush.

This might be off on a tangent somewhat, but.....

I have a Bar-Sto conversion barrel for my 229 that changes it from it's original .40 S&W configuration into a 9mm.
The 9mm cartridges fit just fine in the .40 S&W magazine and also turn it into a 12-round capacity mag instead of the original 10-rounder (Kalifornia still limits "high-capacity magazines", so I'm stuck with a 10-round limit).
So... a SIG .40 S&W magazine will work with 9mm rounds while being shot out of a converted .40, but I don't think that a .40 S&W mag is going to fit into your 9mm frame, because the magazine is too big.

IIRC, that's only true at the top part of the magazine tube. I believe that the basic body width is the same. Nevertheless, the result is the same. You should not be able to put a 9x19 mag in a .40/.357 frame, but not vice versa.

I'm not entirely sure about if your 9mm 229 will allow the 40 S&W mag to seat properly so I'll refer to the advise given above.

As to your other question, yes the 40 S&W mag for a 229 will fit and feed 9mm properly. I have a Sig 229 that came in 40 S&W and since then I picked up a factory 357 Sig bbl and a Bar-Sto 9mm conversion bbl for it. The mags that came with it feeds all three rounds without a problem. I've actually shot IDPA matches using the 9mm bbl without a problem.

LOVE the Sig!!!
