Well, OK, the Ak actually belogs to his dad. I just got back from a trip to the range with a buddy and his 6 year old son. It was a blast(pun intended).

We only took along his AK as this was a spur of the moment trip. He had told me that his son, Jordan, had shot the Ak before and I was just like "yeah sure".

All three of us were having a grand time ending the life of a piece of paper. To my surprise, little Jordan was doing quite well. Kept his finger off the trigger, put the safety on when the mag ran out, watching where the muzzle was pointing, even apologized to a gentleman a few stalls over when a few cases were ejected and landed in this man's stall. I was really impressed. Dad seems to be doing a fine job instructing his son about guns. Heck to my surprise Jordan was bouncing off the walls in the car looking forward to shooting.

Now his shooting wasn't that great but I KNOW that this will improve. Dad was helping him by standing behind him with his thigh on the buttstock as the rifle is still just a tad too large for Jordan. When he finished his last magazine, he came over to where I was standing behind the firing line and was shaking his arm like it was hurt. I asked if he was alright and he replied, and I quote, "Dang! that was fun! I needed that!" Hearing him made my day. It took a 6 year old to make me realize that the anti's aren't winning!

I only hope that I can teach my son (he is only 16 months) to be that enthusiastic about shooting when he is old enough to learn. I thinkwe will master the spoon before we look at the AK.

Have a nice evening.

My (metaphoric) hat's off to parents who teach their children to shoot and shoot safely.

Most excellent. Sounds like a good, but more importantly, safe time was had by all.

Just remember, there is no spoon.;)

My six year old saw a news report of Afgan kids his age learning to shoot AKs.

He said "daddy, you have one of those can I go learn to shoot it"

I took him out the next day. The range was empty and took some time to refresh him on the basics of gun handling.

The SAR1 is a fairly short rifle so it wasn't much of a problem
putting it on the rest and getting him situated.

I made sure the rifle stayed in the rest and that he exercised trigger control on my command.

The sights were a little difficult for him but he managed to hit
with about 11 rounds out of 30 on a man sized target at 100
yards. Even though he is only 50 Lbs recoil was no problem

We switched to the scoped 10/22 after he had got to fire the AK
since it was a little easier for him to control.

The only problem I had is when he bragged to his mother that night where I had taken him

I have a 4 month old, and she has owned a Kimber SVT .22 for about 4 months.
