Sounds like the people caused more damage than the gunman.
Any word on weapons used?

Article said it was an "assault type rifle". Right, everything is an assault type rifle when it is bad.

I thought assault weapons were illegal in NY and malls were gun safe areas?

Let's see if they get the hint here: Law abiding citizens are not doing this. Betcha they don't even think of that one.
Let's think even harder, if there were more no carry laws, then would this still have happened? You think so too, huh?

A lone gunman opened fire with an assault rifle
then
Police did not identify the suspect or the type of gun he used.
Which is it? I guess the reporters know it's an assault weapon even thought the cops didn't tell them what it was? How - magic? Mind reading?
Idiots...

From Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,147490,00.html):
Gunman Opens Fire at Upstate New York Mall
Sunday, February 13, 2005
KINGSTON, N.Y. — A lone gunman opened fire with an assault rifle Sunday inside a crowded mall in upstate New York, wounding one person before running out of ammunition and being subdued by employees, authorities said.
The gunman began shooting inside the Hudson Valley Mall (search) shortly after 3 p.m. in Kingston, nearly 90 miles north of New York City.
The 24-year-old gunman went into a Best Buy (search) store and started firing. When he ran out of ammunition, he was captured by mall employees, police said.
Police did not identify the suspect or the type of gun he used. State police Capt. Wayne Olson said investigators did not know the exact number of shots fired.
An Army recruiter was shot in the leg but was not the target of the attack, said Lt. Col. Paul Fanning, a National Guard (search) spokesman. The recruiter was evacuated by helicopter to an Albany hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Another person was injured in the hand, but police said the injury was not a gunshot wound.
The mall was evacuated after the shooting, but an unknown number of workers remained inside after police surrounded the building.
"Everyone was running and screaming. Then I heard the shots," witness Heather Craig told Fox News. "People were running over people. Other people were just standing there dumbfounded."
All mall entrances remained blocked off by police Sunday evening.

Well, he killed many people with it, right? That means it had to be an auto loader. He did it illegally, right? So it had to be a "highcapacitymilitarystyleassaultweapon" of the type--guess what--just made legal again after the expiration of the AWB. See, if the AWB were in effect this would never happen, right?
How long til someone slings that nonsense?

Thankfully no one was killed.
It seems to me the majority of these types of nuts are not real shooters - fortunately. Imagine what would happen if a 3-Gun competitor suddenly "lost it." :uhoh:

So from what we know our intrepid jerkweed comes into a Best Buy loaded with people with a "Assault Type Weapon" fires multiple read 20 or so shots and manages to hit one guy in the thigh. Now I am not saying that I want bloodshed or that I wish for a higher body count but does this seem a bit weird to anybody else. Drunk/High maybe, disgruntled employee. Definitiely doesn't sound like he was a crack shot or in complete control of himself.
Once again thank God there were only minor injuries. But you almost gotta wonder if they pull off this guys rubber face and it is Dianne Feinstein saying ".....and I'd a gotten away with it too if it wasn't for you meddling republicans."
My honest guess at this point is t'd off ex or current employee, mixed with a liquor or drugs and grabbed the first gun he could see to go raise a ruckous.
Why can't these idiots just go get drunk and pass out like the rest of the free world. Geeez, I am heavily armed and gotten the shaft at work a time or two and the worst think I ever wanted to do was take a leak on my boss's shoes. Always sorta figured that would be rather funny actually.

I've been in that mall as my kid went to school near there. Because of NYS gun laws it is very unlikely that anyone could defend themselves.
In TX malls, there is a reasonable chance that someone could be armed and defend themselves.
So what is the lesson here?

I'm confused, the SAME article states ...
A lone gunman opened fire with an assault rifle
... and ...
Police did not identify the suspect or the type of gun he used
... if the type of gun used was not identified, then why are they saying it was an assault rifle?

Thank goodness no one was killed. It made about a 10 second spot on the Today show this morning. I think it will fade into obscurity in about 2 days. Of course the firearm is being labeled as an assault weapon immediately.
Even my liberal wife knows that the tool can't be blamed for someone's actions. If New York was shall issue (instead of county discretionary may issue) would someone have fired back and been able to stop him sooner?

I think, can't remember where I read the numbers, that NYS has a higher number of concealed carry permits issued than any other state. But that has to do with our "you can't even buy a handgun until you obtain a pistol permit" policy.

There are about 1 million pistol permit holders in NY, but not all of them are CCW...

I thought those AR things were deadly
The guy only managed to hit one person, evidently by accident
We should issue them to crazies...they are the safest rifle in the world :what:

assault style rifle..here we go again.did ya here the first questions from the media? "what type of gun was used?".."how many shots were fired?" then..was anyone hurt.
whatcha bet there will be a media circus complete with tables full of "other" evil looking guns available...a highly biased story...eye witness accounts from every joe and mary that has ever been victim to any assault involving firearms..from the beginning of time to this and another push for yet more restrictions.
the focus will be shifted from the shooter to his assault style gun.

The average eyewitness knows jack ???? about guns, and I am still waiting for a reliable account of what weapon was used. Pretty impressive that 60 something shots fired at close range produces 2 woundings.

OK, Chuckie, Hillary, et al, watch my lips, heed my words, "The reason we call them 'criminals' is because they don't obey the law."
"Gun control" laws mean nothing to criminals. Everything this dipschitz did was already illeagal, 'spain why you think any more laws would change anything?
