View Full Version : Anyone here ever seen a MAG-7 shotgun?

It looks like an Uzi that mated with an AK, but the magazine - yes, MAGAZINE - is in the pistol grip, not forward of the trigger like Saigas.

It takes a proprietary 12-gauge shell (2.3") to fit in the magazine, which holds 6 shells (total capacity: 6+1). They were only imported for about 2 years in the mid-'90's.

Anyone here know anything about these South African pump guns?

Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement did a write up on them in about '97 . If I dug through some boxes of old gun rags I could probably find it.

Had a funky looking wooden stock, IIRC.

Southernohiogun had, maybe still does have, them for sale.
Although about as pretty as a hi point carbine, i am strangely fascinated by them as well.
The original 'real LEO' version had a short, i think 8-inch, barrel so it was like a little shotgun pistol for VCQB: 'very close quarters battle'. :)
If it were cheaper, and i had the inclination to fill out the ATF forms, that's what i would do with it.
But otherwise, it has all the problems of the mini-shells (bad patterns, etc). Its just that at across the room distances those bad patterns don't amount to too much.

MAGAZINE - is in the pistol grip

Kee-Ripes man! how do you get your hand around a grip that must be as big as a 2X4? :scrutiny:

Bizarre-looking, to say the least; these are chambered for the Aquila "mini-shells", so you don't have a 2 3/4"-deep pistol-grip, but they're still a handful. From Max Popenker's page: http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh20-e.htm

Yeah I saw those in the SOG flyer a while ago. Since the civvie version has a 16" bbl, I'll just stick with my 500 which holds full size shells and more of 'em :)

The article was probably by Walt Rauch, but it may have been a year or two earlier. I got to shoot the Mag-7 he had for evaluation. My brother used to do the photography for Walt's articles and I got to tag along.

We were all pretty underwhelmed with the piece. It was awkward and didn't feel as nice as a conventional pump gun.

The idea of a box magazine-fed shotgun is a good one. A Saiga is a good example of a better way to do it.

and Saiga's are on sale in the new CDNN catalog.

If I can't buy anything, I'll tempt others.....

You saved me some serious money!

The store near me has a (barely) used one with 2 magazines, manual and 275 rounds of the mini-shells for $589 (but I could have it for $500).

I called Southern Ohio Gun - 27 NIB Mag-7's in stock; $229. No ammo, though, and only 1 mag/gun.

My interest was mainly because I knew the guy who imported them and whose company was marked on the receiver! He held an Import/Export License from the State Department and had some interesting firearms.
