The sound of gunshots shook a quiet neighborhood in Luzerne County early Monday morning. Police opened fire, killing a man they said went after them with a chain saw.

Troopers said a Forty Fort officer first showed up with paramedics to a home on River Street, responding to a call for a heart attack. No one answered the door when they arrived and that's when they heard the sound of a chain saw. They called for backup.

Troopers said when they arrived the man went after them with the chain saw, even cutting one trooper in the back and shoulder with the saw. Officers and troopers opened fire, killing the man.

Neighbors woke up to the sound of multiple gunshots outside their homes. "I'm absolutely shocked. It's quiet, well, it's quiet except for all the traffic because it's a very busy street but otherwise the neighbors are very nice. Nothing like this ever happens here," said neighbor Maria Delazzari.

Troopers said there was no apparent medical problem when they responded to the home on River Street. They said the trooper who was cut was treated and released from the hospital. They are not releasing the name of the man who was killed until his family is notified of his death.

I think a chainsaw would be extremly devastating, but like a knife you have to get very close to use it. There lies the problem if you are going after troopers with guns! It sounds like an evil black chainsaw to me.

It sounds like an evil black chainsaw to me. Imagine if he'd gone after a citizen instead of the police. Think 21' rule. One might be able to survive a knife stab but a chain saw coming down on a shoulder at 45* or swiped across your abdomen - nah! If it'd been me - even armed - I believe I would have just turned around and run away as fast as I could.

Being cut up by a chain saw - not really on the top of anyone's list of things to do I imagine.

Wonder if the guy owned Texas Chain Saw Massacre? :evil:

I've seen my share of chain saw accidents, and they generally make nasty surface wounds (multiple parallel cuts) but don't go deep. There are exceptions, of course. I hear the officer involved in this one wasn't seriously hurt.

Obviously, I'm not knocking the police for reacting the way they did- just suggesting that a chain saw makes a better weapon in the movies than it does in real life.

I once had an acquaintance who removed half of his right foot with a chain saw. He was rather drunk at the time of his sublime exhibition of stupidity. I wasn't there when it happened, but he was "kind" enough to show me the aftermath. Looked really nasty.

Hope the cop is okay. Sounds like the perp was a nut job.
