I tried dissassembling my 870 (complete) for the first time tonight.

However, I run into a problem on the final step (putting the trigger guard back into the reciever).

I can't seem to get the trigger group to go back into the reciever.
Does the bolt need to be forward or backward?

I try to slide it into the gun, but the latch where you put in the shells (I don't know the technical name, sorry) will not go into the gun.

I can put either end of the trigger group into the gun, but when I try to push the other end in, it just won't go.

Also, the hole where the second (smallest) reciever pin fits is only open on one side. It seems that there is a strip of metal inside the gun that is barring the pin from going all the way through (which isn't really a problem right now because I can't even get the TG in to be ABLE to put the final two pins in).

About in the middle of the group and at the very rear are two hollow pins.
These are bushings that the trigger group pins pass through.

Make sure these are centered in the trigger group. (They're slip fits, so you can push them with your fingers).
If these slide out slightly on either side, they can prevent the trigger group from fitting in place.

Next, make sure the shell stops on both sides of the receiver are in their proper places.
These are the long, flat bars near the lower edge of the receiver, and SHOULD be tightly staked in place.

Bolt forward, slide the front of the group in first, then lower the rear in.
Don't tip the front in too much, just slide the shell lifter in before the rear of the group.

Make sure you can see daylight through the holes in the receiver, then gently tap the pins in with a screwdriver handle.

The two hollow bushings you checked above each have a retainer spring ring in them to lock the trigger group pins in place after they are inserted.
That's the "strip of metal" you see inside the bushings.

One more thing that I did not see mentioned above.

Make sure the hammer is back, cocked, and the safety is on. I only mention the safety in case you bump the trigger during this operation.

That reminds me of the first quadrajet I rebuilt. Lucky for me I had another there to take apart as I put the original back together :p

UHH...

Putting the trigger group in is the first step not the last step. Doing it this way I have never had any problems.

Hmm. I tinkered with it for nearly an hour last night and think I need to have the bolt stop restaked, as it will not stay put.
