My reloading stuff is sced. to arrive monday, my bench is built and ready and I have bought 1lb of W231 1000 Win. large pistol primers. and 500 .451" 230gr. lead round nose bullets locally.

My data says to start at 4.5gr and the max is 5.1gr.

I don't have a chrono so what are some common successful charge weights?

of course i will start at the minimum but don't want to make 100rds too weak to function my gun. Commander length if that matters.

Thanks Guys
Geoff

Since I've been loading (which is about 4 months now) I have come to the conclusion that W231 is the best under 230 ball ammo.

I have tried PP, Blue Dot and W231 so far and I like W231 the best.

I load 5.5gr of W231 under West Coast plated 230gr ball and Winchester primers.

I agree with the 231/230 load range stated although I've heard of others going higher. FWIW, I've found that 4.6 will cycle most 1911 (stock) slides pretty reliably. 4.8 gr is jsut a touch hotter but adds some margin for error.

The WW book says 4.5 to 5.1 of 231 with 230 grains of lead. The heavier load gives about 100 more fps.

Hornadys Fifth Editon lists the following loads for 231:

4.9 gr = 750 fps
5.4 gr = 800 fps
5.8 gr = 850 fps

Winchester and Remington LP primers

I have been carrying 220 gr Lyman LRN cast from WW, water cooled loaded to 5.7 gr 231. Stout load for stouter black bears! No signs of pressure, rounds are accurate with no leading.

Loads have been shot from PAra SSP, Norinco A1 and Commander.

Enjoy and stay safe

I personally like the WW231. Probably better powders out there but this one is also easy to obtain. With lubed hard cast the guns get a little dirtier , i suppose from the lube. My Load is 5.8 grains of WW231 with the 230 gr. Some might think it is a little stiff but i like to shoot factory velocity in my guns and do not load any special loads for plinking.
