Bowling for Columbine, the anti-gun documentary by satirist Michael Moore, has won best original screenplay in the Writers Guild of America's awards.
This marks the first time a documentary has won the prize. No other documentary had ever been nominated in the 55 years the Guild has been giving awards.

David Hare's screenplay for The Hours won best adapted screenplay at the ceremony widely seen as a good indicator for the Oscars.

The Academy Awards are announced on 23 March.

Screenplays honoured by the Writers Guild often go on to win at the Oscars as well, not least because many of the same people vote for both sets of awards.

Guild officials praised Moore's film as "highly innovative".

"Our members' appreciation of Michael Moore's clever, humorous and personal storytelling is a tribute to his vision and the power of his subject matter," WGA West president Victoria Riskin said.

Gun culture

The Hours traces the story of three women
The film, an essay on America's obsession with firearms, has taken $18m (£11.2m), more money than any other documentary in US history.

It nudged out My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Antwone Fisher, Far From Heaven, and Gangs of New York.

Moore said he was "shocked and honoured" to be nominated for the prize.

"Documentary writing is probably the hardest form of screenwriting because you can't really write until you shoot the film," he said.

Pure politics. Mainstream America couldn't care less what that bloviating bag of hot air has to say about guns or anything else.

The big problem with it that it got the awards in a non fiction catagory.I haven't seen it but from I have read about it is big piece of fiction.

All of his movies (Moore), are stupid, contrived, smug, and irrelevant.

Like P. J. O'Rouke, he is a pseudo intellectual, making snide comments on a society that he has no clue about.

He tugs at emotionalism's, and editing his films as such, to elicit an angry response from the ignorant.

Yawn.

When a documentary film wins a writing award we have proof that the documentary has no validity whatsoever.

You do not write a documentary, you shoot a documentary; you interview, you investigate, you report, you document, record, and inspect; you question, cajole, inquire, even seduce; you submit, partake, and perhaps entrap; but whe you begin to write, create or exaggerate, you cease to be making a documentary and you begin making a fictional piece.

This award discredits the work and its producer more than we ever could have.

technically, it isnt even a documentary. a true documentary provides facts, and shows both sides of the issue.
BfC only provides the biased opinions of moore and those who agree with him.
we could make a "documentary" using the same tactics Moore did and would probably win a useless award as well, from a guild of actors whose opinions dont mean squat.
or we could sit around and pat ourselves on the back because we think for ourselves and we work hard at educating our simian brains, instead of working hard on increasing our fatty tissues.
