Who do I contact to see if I can shoot on my property?

My friend and I are going to look at a house in the country that's for rent. I'm not sure how big the property is but it sounds like it might be big enough to shoot on. Should I call the sheriff's office? Or maybe the district attorney?

I'd ask that landlord and neighbors. If they are cool with it then you're greenlight. Hack off your neighbors to the extent that they call the land lord and you won't be there long.

In MI I'd first check the DNRs' site for info about minimum shooting distances from roads & buildings.Even a good sized piece of property might not fly if there's a barn too close.
Then I'd check w/the Sheriff & then the neighbors.
It won't do you any good to be caught plinking in the backyard by the DNR w/only the excuse of "my neighbor said it was O.K."
One other thing & this is about backstops.About ten years ago a couple of teenagers were plinking w/an SKS in an otherwise O.K. area. They would have been fine if an errant bullet-I kid you not-went through a lady golfers thigh waaaay downrange.A freak accident to be sure but one to keep in mind.

Depends on the location. In Michigan, typically you need to be 150 yards from an occupied structure. Contact your local sheriff or township office. With permisson from the adjacent land owners, this can be reduced. :D

If you are inside an incorporated area then you would check with the City Attorney. If you are in a county there should be a board of county commissioners that can let you know. If you are in a neighborhood that has restrictive covenents, that might prohibit it. Some counties have a land size requirement. I know that in Williamson county Texas all you have to do is to be in the county and not in a city. There is no land requirement.

Usually the county sheriff will hve information on areas that are considered shooting or non-shooting areas. They should have a map in the office that is marked with boundaries for the zones.

Start with the landlord, for sure. If he says no then you don't need to ask anybody else because regardless of whether it is legal or not the landlord's rules apply. If he says no problem then check with others. I'd start with a realtor and ask them to check on restrictions.
Good Luck.
