I saw a SxS shotgun where the bores were beveled at the crown inside the barrel. They were just beveled inside aobut 1/8-1/4 of an inch. The shop says the barrels were not cut, and didn't know the reason why the guy did this. It appeared to be a decent job, but why would this be done on a shotgun?

It still was choked at full/modified, and the shop owner said the pattern would still be the same.

I asked at a couple other stores at it and everyone said they had no idea why this would be done. It was a Stevens 311, and while I'd normally pass on such a thing, it was in super nice shape and all originalsans the beveling.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Only reason I could possibly think of would be to adjust the pattern somehow, but I'm no expert.

I've seen several Stevens 311's with the condition you mention. I have no idea why it's there.

In your opinion, do you think it came that way from the factory?

There is an aftermarket buttpad on the gun and its about the worst job I've ever seen. But the beveling looks almost pretty good. Not perfect, but with the 311's they never were. So now I'm kind of thinking, this may be some sort of factory difference - which seems typical for 311's.
