Got a hold an SW 1911 yesterday. I like it! It seems to well put together and has a good balance to it. Sights are good, but could be a little bigger, still easy to get a good pic with. Trigger needs some breaking in, and the beavertail is under more tension, I think another spring for the firing pin safety, but still not a problem to hold in.
Did not get to shoot it, though, and it is priced about the same as other 1911s on the market. Now if they could get rid of the roll marks...

I haven't shot one myself let alone seen one (I live in CA too), but they seem to be better put together (to me) than SA "Loaded" or Kimber. If S&W comes out with a blued/black steel model and with different roll marks I'd be all over that. Unless....Colt sends more 1911's to CA.:p

I think the 1911 for S&W is here to stay. I heard they're planning to come out with Commander sized and Officer sized 1911's also. They'd be stupid to discontinue it.

And competition and variety can only be a good thing for 1911 fans.

The market is already saturated with 1911s. If they had done this before Kimber and Springfield Armory started churning 1911s out by the thousands, I would be more confident that they will stay around.

I like mine! I hope it stays and we get more models. Only 100 rounds through my SW1911 so far; it is much better well finished that my SA loaded. Better stock trigger too. But just like different breeds of canine, each has it's own lineage and personality, I like them both.

They haven't cleared the Mass AG office yet to be put on the "List", but I did rent it at the S&W factory range. It felt good in my hand and it balanced nice.

The state of Mass has virtually eliminated new 1911s for sale because of thier strict guidelines and approval process. Seeing S&W's factory is in state, they are making a run to be one of the only sellers of 1911 in Mass. Just about every local gunshop in the area has started a purchase list once they become approved. Lets just say that S&W will sell many of these just in Mass, as one gun shop has almost 100 people on a list. It will take a while for S&W to supply the demand here.

It's not first on my list of firearm purchases, but it definately has made the top 5.

Rockrivr1: Just to be clear, nothing ever clears the AG's office and the AG's office has nothing to do with the Roster. The Roster is issued by the Executive Office of Public Safety (EOPS). A gun that is on the Roster meets the legal requirements in Chapter 140. However, just because a gun is on the Roster does not mean that it also meets the Attorney General's Consumer Protection regulations.

The AG's regs are different than Chapter 140 in several ways, most noticeably that the AG's regs require that semi-autos have either a chamber loaded indicator or magazine safety disconnect.

The AG's office will not say whether or not a gun meets its limitations. It just tells manufacturers that if the AG decides their gun does not meet the regs, then the AG will see them in court.

The SW1911 does meet the AG's regulations because it does have a chamber loaded indicator. What S&W is waiting on is EOPS, not the AG.

To be honest, I'm not 100% up to date on the whole "approval" process, except to say that there are a whole bunch of things that I can't have because "They are not on the list".

You can find the Roster (http://www.state.ma.us/eops/gun_roster2002.htm) on EOPS web site. This implements the restrictions in the law, which you can find in Mass General Law Chapter 140 Section 123 (http://www.state.ma.us/legis/laws/mgl/140-123.htm) -- you'll need to scroll down to paragraph 18.

As to the new 1911's that have been added to the whole group of out of the box custom 1911's, I'll take the Dan Wesson line over the new Smith or even SA and Many of the Kimber products. Also no huge rollmarks on the wessons.

The SW1911 was approved for sale in CA on 2/3/03 so we should be seeing more soon. Apparently prices are drifting below $700 in other states.

I agree that the market is saturated. But since Kimber started making their own frames (instead of sourcing them from S&W) about 18 months ago, there have been very serious quality control problems. Buy a Kimber and you get one cr*ppy mag. Buy a SW and you get two stainless Wilsons. Plus a forged sear and you don't have to worry about your sights falling off, or the barrel lugs chipping, or the ambi safeties bending-- all of which happened to my Kimber Gold Match. SW also gives you a Briley bushing and Wolff springs. Kimber gives you a junk bushing and funky springs.

Basically Kimber's quality control problems and poor MIM parts invited this entry by SW. If SW can fix the styling a little on its product I think it will eventually dominate the market. I just wish they made a model with no forward serrations and just the S&W circle logo on the sides, stainless frame, blued or parkerized slide.

Warrior-- Yes, I've been following the Patriot with considerable interest. The proofing videos on the DW site are impressive.

Sadly, I am not able to buy Dan Wesson products in California because of the stupid mandatory testing schemes. :cuss: :mad: :fire: :banghead:

It is too costly for small companies to submit all their pistols for certification, although I would think DW could pick one model, say the stainless patriot for certification.
