What is your position on abortion? What are your reasons for it?

It's the woman's decision, not mine. She has to live with the consequences of her actions, not me.

From a mod not too long ago.......

I think that this subject is simply too thorny and controversial to be debated adequately on what is, after all, a firearms-related forum. Obviously, each of us has strongly-held opinions and/or beliefs about abortion (most certainly including me!), but this forum is not the proper place to discuss them. Please, let's keep our focus on The High Road, and why we're here.

This thread will probably end up closed, or at least moved. In the meantime:

My personal view, regardless of religious beliefs, is life begins at the moment of conception. That is when a unique, human DNA signature is created. Freshly created, it has not yet had an opportunity to commit any crime worthy of punishment - it is by nature completely innocent of wrong-doing.

To terminate it without an extremely compelling justification would be murder. An innocent life would be destroyed.

That said, it is part of my duty as a man to never, ever, ever put a woman in a position where she is faced with such a dilemma. Men who do otherwise have no honor.

It's an odd post from a newb in a gun forum.

Sorry, I didn't know this topic was out of bounds. I was just wondering what opinions like-minded people (on firearms rights) had on it. Is there a way I can delete this thread?

If you really wanted to broach this subject here the best way to do it would be via a poll where no comments we allowed, just a vote. I don't know what good that would do though.

fwiw, I would vote the "Abortion is homocide" selection.

She has to live with the consequences of her actions, not me. If your are the father of the child or the abortee you would have to live (or die) with the consequences.

I think you will find that gun owners at large are just like everyone else. They are like minded when it comes to liking guns (although not the same guns) but, beyond that their opinions are just as widely varied as any other sample of the population, although somewhat more conservative as a rule.

What c_yeager said. Personally, while abortion makes me uncomfortable, I think it should remain legal and available. Then again, I'm the guy who makes my friends mad by pointing out that there is a perfectly good correlation between society's justifications for abortion and capital punishment, when most of them are for one and against the other (depends on who as to which they are for/against).

That sounds interesting. What's the correlation?

Moral considerations aside, we as a society have decided that a person's right to life is overridden by society's right to revenge itself upon him for the comission of certain particularly heinous acts.

We as a society have also decided that a fetus's right to develop and be born is overriden by a woman's right to decide whether or not she wishes to carry it to term or have a medical procedure to end it.

You can argue the right and wrong of it all you want, but until you can convince enough of the right people to your point of view they will both stay legal.

After that I usually refuse to discuss the matter any further. It's not like anyone's position on such a deeply personal and inflammatory subject is going to be changed by arguments, so no good is served by it.

I think that abortion is just par for the course in our modern day throwaway society where everything is someone elses fault or responsibility instead of our own. :barf:

I believe the choice is up to the woman.
She can CHOOSE to practice RESPONSIBLE sex habits.
She can CHOOSE to RESPONSIBLY bear and raise the said child.
She can CHOOSE to RESPONSIBLY bear and give up the child for adoption.
I have illustrated three CHOICES.
A fourth is not needed.
Respectfully, Zeke

Only when a doctor says that it's medically necessary. I'm sticking with life beginning at conception unless one can prove otherwise. The only likely solution is to arm fetuses.

heisler, the gunowners of this forum have a political range from very liberal to very conservative. Some are straight; some are gay. Some are male and some are female. How could there be a "THR opinion" on the subject? Or a "gunowner opinion"?

There is no unanimity of Glock over 1911 or vice versa. There is no unanimity of AK over AR or vice versa. The only unanimity here is a pretty strong interest in guns and the right to own and bear or use them. Even there, the purposes are widely varied...

Abortion and religion are "hot topics" and invariably somebody will be strongly offended by somebody else's opinion or wording of an opinion. This commonly leads to personal attacks and some variant of flaming, which is why I'm going to close this thread with its prior examples of dispassionate commentary--before it goes downhill.

A pre-emptive strike, if yu will...
