View Full Version : Money to burn--what handgun to buy?
Mr. Tettnanger
February 27, 2005, 09:13 AM
I have been saving for a new handgun purchase, but I don't really have an idea what to buy! I have about $700. No reason to purchase, except that I just got the new gun bug! I already reload so, that is not where to spend.
Handguns that I own:
S&W 629 Classic(44 mag w/ 8 3/8" barrel)
S&W 617 (.22 w/ 6" barrel)
S&W 642 (.38 snubby)
Davis .380 (if this really even counts as more then a paperweight!)
I have thought about getting the following:
NAA Black Widow in .22 mag for deep concealment
Ruger sp101 in 357 magnum
S&W 640, or 65 357 magnum
Kel-Tec P-11 9mm (QUALITY ISSUES?)
Kel-Tec P-3at .380 (QUALITY ISSUES and neww design coming out?)
Makarov 9x18
I am a revolver fan. I also shoot left handed so most semi-autos are "awkward". So any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm thinking of getting a Makarov myself. Have you thought a Hi-Power?

It would help if we knew what you already had.
If you don't have any handguns I would strongly suggest that you spend the $700 on one of the CDNN HiPowers and use the rest to get yourself a nice second hand K frame ( i see the model65 on your list, fine choice). You would then have two of the most venerable designs in all of firearms history and an excellent examlple of both a revolver and a semiautomatic.

Mr. T:
Have you thought about a single action revolver such as a Ruger Blackhawk? Or perhaps, a bolt action rifle (some of them come with the bolt on the left) or getting into the shotgun sports? $700 can get you several different pieces.

Walther P5 - already set up for a lefty with left eject. Not cheap.

Try the Smith 386PD in .357Mag. That's one of the Scandium/Titanium carry revolvers. It's one of my best shooting .38's believe it or not. I shoot Special +Ps in it. It's a neat revolver. I bought the .44 Mag version as well.

I was looking at your list and you don't own anything in 45acp. Why not get one!

Everybody needs at least one 1911 self-loader! ;)
I will recommend a Springfield WW-II G.I. model .45 ACP. I promise, you
will NEVER get tired of it! :D

Snubbies like the SP-101 and M65 are fun if you don't put too many hot rounds through them ;) How about a single action? Maybe a cowboy style gun? Ruger Blackhawk? SAA?
For self-loaders for lefties take a look at the CZ 85B or CZ 85 Combat. Safety and slide release are both ambi, but the mag release is not. The HK offerings are also lefty friendly with an ambi mag release and reversable or ambi safety/decocker.

I second that and you will still have almost $300 left over. Best buy in handguns I ever made.

Thanks for all the great replies! Keep them coming.
Ala Dan and Chuckles=The Springfield WWII Gi model sounds interesting. Is is southpaw/lefty freindly?
Ala Dan, what would be a "fair" price for the Springfied? I noticed in a few of your posts that you work in a gun shop and have posted info on pricing.
The suggestions for a single action revolver sound good two?

be advised that I only have the parkerized Springfield WW-II G.I.
model in stock right now priced at $399.88 while they last. Within the
next few days expect all firearms prices to rise, across the board. Its
still unclear exactly how much that will be? We won't increase our
current inventory; but the new (2005) prices will take effect as
shipments begin arriving. Based on this information, the last stainless
model Springers we had sold out! :uhoh: at $429.88. :D
Whether or not these guns are "southpaw friendly" remains to be seen;
but I'm quite sure a lot of "lefty's" used them in the service of our
country. ;) :)

Dig up another $100 and find a good deal on a S&W 500. :what: :D
Actually, my wife and I have been looking at these 500's for the last several months, but.....I already have a couple of 357s. I, also, would suggest a 357 of some sort. It's a great all-around gun, and you get to share ammo with your 38 Spl. If not another revolver, I also "second" the idea of a 1911. I've been eyeing the Springfield US GI for under $450, but I can't seem to convince myself to buy a non-Colt 1911 (I have three Colts).......yeah, I'd say a 500....er....I mean 357 or a nice 1911.

The only really left handed friendly guns I have touched is the Walther p99 (500ish) H&K standard and compact, and ruger.
If you have large hands the H&K is a great choice. The walther has a replacable backstrap to widden or thin out the grip. Its also very ambidextrious. The H&Ks have piece to conver them over to left handed so you dont have to reach over or use the index finger in a akward position. The ruger semi auto family seems very ambi as well. Most have safeties on both sides and come in a good range of calibers. I dont know much about the newer ones as I am not a ruger fan, but I have one that I beat up all the time.

You don't need another handgun.
You need to buy ammo, a couple of truckloads of it and get good!

Get yourself a 1911. Get yourself a Colt Government.

I agree, you need a .45ACP. Get a new S&W 625JM revolver... they are a new limited version of the regular 4" 625-8, but come with hardchromed trigger & hammer, Jerry Miculek-style wood stock, and an easily changed gold-bead front sight - all for an MSRP just $50 over the stock version. I love mine.
You can buy a set of Lee dies and reloading supplies - even some extra moonclips - with the leftover moola. The 625 is an N-framed big bore with very little recoil with standard .45 ACP fare - and, you can buy ammo anywhere, should you run low on a weekend.

Yes, you are right, your handgun collection is quite incomplete!
All you need is:
- One 1911. Best bets are mentioned by Ala Dan.
- One 357. May I suggest an older 686-5.
Best of luck!

The M1911 is very friendly to left-handers. There are four controls -- trigger, slide lock, magazine release, and safety lock. The last is the only "right-handed" control (Left handers use the trigger finger to work the magazine release and slide lock and have a slight advantage.) The safety can be converted to ambidextrious.
The M1911 is also well-suited for conversion kits -- I have two, a Ciener and a Colt Service Ace.
Add a 28-lb Wolff recoil spring and matching firing pin return spring (less than $10) and you can shoot .45 Super -- and the gun will still function with full charge .45 ACP loads.

You should look at getting a nice 1911 I prefer Dan Wesson Pointman series, then you can get a Marvel .22 slide for it and have a economical target .22 also. My 2 cents. Or if you really want some fun, get a Taursus 454. Its a blast.

Excuse me Sir, but where I work the Seecamp .32 ACP sells for $459.95
plus 9% sales tax. :( Grant it, thats down a lot from the old $700-800
price of a few years ago; but by todays standards, its still a plenty. :D

A Glock 19 as an all around good 9mm. Or I'd buy a loaded SS Springfield Champion with night sights.

That's what I'm getting the next time I have a few hundred to blow. I just can't decide on the caliber, .357 or .45. :)

Looks like you have most of the bases covered EXCEPT....you seem to be lacking a mid barreled S&W. For shame! I would sugest either a nice 4" 686 to help shoot up the 38/357 you own or a 4"/5" 625 in 45 acp. Both guns are hard to beat and fill the void in your collection
Oh yea, be advised, once you try a 625, your going to start lusting for a 1911 to share ammo with :D
