They were these handguns that had the handgrip in the center of the design and they didn't have a "slide" but a bolt that cycled inside the receiver. they looked really balanced and pretty cool. The one Arnold used had a barrel shroud, while another did not. The front sights were enclosed like MP-5 front sights and the guns looked really cool.

Does anyone have any idea who made them?

most futuristic movie guns are actual guns (i.e. mini-14, uzi, mp5) with plastic coverings that are only for appearance. a perfect example of this is in the movie timecop when the pistols used are beretta 92fs's with cylindrical coverings over the slide. not sure who made the total recall guns but am almost positive the small subguns were mini uzis with plastic handguards.

I seem to recall a lot of UZI and MAC style guns in Total Recall. Haven't seen it in a while though.

True, 99% of futuristic movie guns are dudded-up real guns, but these were real designs because I saw an ad for them in a catalog (CDNN or something) and it was the same thing used in the film. But now I can't remember.

I'll have to find it.

The gun in question was real. It was a Claridge Hi-Tec, which was itself a descendant of the Goncz. Picture. (http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg135-e.htm)

Yep, I just found that early this morning. Apparently they were really crappy, I mean a 9mm BLOWBACK pistol????? But it sure looked cool in the movie.

I think I have partial recall...

The handguns that Arnold used were Hi-Techs (CDNN has them for sale now). I do not know if Claridge was making those at the time, I think they were the original manufacturer, Goncz. The operative types (Michael Ironsides?) used MACs with funky add on hand grips. The security guards used Mini14s with those cheesy bullpup stocks.
