Dudes, with a paratrooper stock, its smaller than a 11.5 in barreled AR...it recoils less and therefore faster for follow up shots, its equally as reliable, ammo is almost as cheap, OK the round is a bit anemic, but even me, a disgusting fatbody, can stand there at 25 yards and while screaming "get some" can fill a head of a sillouhette target with 20 rounds as fast as I can pull the trigger, and I can do it faster than my AR with an optic....ya think anemicness mens much for head shots...??

Everybody needs an M1 carbine...

Get some, get some

Agreed.

It may be pretty close to the ideal compromise between recoil, power, capacity and compactness. You can even get stocks and mounts and stuff for tactical ninja gear, now.

I still prefer the venerable 12 guage for CQB, but hey. Whatever works. And this would cerainly work

I agree. I find my M1 to be a fine rifle and would be excellent for cqb; even without the para stock. I will disagree with your statement that the 30 carbine round is anemic though. I would be very distrought with having one loged inside me.

Wild, if you ever get any in used, in decent shape, let me know!

"CQB rifle" is an oxymoron. ;)

M1 carbines are fun, but I'd rather have a true carbine round for defense - i.e. 7.62x39 or 5.56.

The Universal that I had was a bugger to deal with. I was one step away from installing heavier recoil springs...but the company wanted it back for an inventory check. Never could get it to strip a round from the magazine under its own power.

Also, I don't think the flip switch safety on the Universal is conducive to fast, natural disengagement. Were there a crossbolt like on the Rem 870, I would give the carbine a 'go'. Until then, I'm still looking to finish the AR build.

Definitely a handy little rifle that I hope to have in my inventory some day.

I have to agree - M1 Carbine is an excellent handling weapon, and well capable of getting the job done at close range. I believe CorBon makes SD ammo for it now....

I think it does just fine for HD/short distance work, especially when you're not relegated to FMJ ammo. There are too many nice softpoint/hollowpoint rounds available, and it's one of the few rounds I reload.

An aside from my childhood:

Where I grew up, we had a constable who 'inherited' the job from her father at his death and won every subsequent election for the office until she retired shortly before her death at an advanced age, 'Sis' Dickerson. Sis carried an Enforcer in a bag everywhere she went and on more than one occasion broke up fights with it by popping off a couple of rounds when the roughnecks would have too much Pearl in their mud. Quite a gal.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Did anyone read the interview with Rudy of 'Survivor' fame a few months back in G&A? If you didn't here was one of the original Seals, he saw extensive action in Vietnam. What did he list as one of his favorite weapons? You guessed it, the M1/M2 Carbine. He felt that at the distances the firefights were occuring at, it was a good combination of power and low recoil, plus you could carry lots of ammo for it.

I love my M1 Carbine. It's amazingly light and handy. A joy to plink with. Ammo price is not that bad (Georgia Arms). I can even get them sent to my door with my C&R.

My only problem is they are getting to darn expensive, otherwise I'd have more than one.

I agree with your sentiment.......which is why I have TWO M1 Carbines. :D Fortunately for me, I bought both of mine for only $139-$149 in the early '90's. I just wish I'd bought a couple of Garands when they were $199-$219. :( I wish the ammo was a little bit cheaper for the carbines, but I did just pick up a few bags from Georgia Arms at the Charlotte, NC show this past Saturday at $9/50......Now, I just need to take one of them to the range, again.

edit: I also wished I'd bought one of the reproduction paratrooper stocks when they were only $69. The one I saw at the gun show as $169!!! I still may buy one, some day. ;)

Well, I have yet to see a PAC-4C (or -4B, or -4A) available for sale to the general public. It uses an IR laser, so you have to have NVGs to see it. But being able to shoot in the dark is a hell of an advantage.

I was issued an M2 carbine as my personal weapon for my first tour Viet Nam as an adviser to 4/48 ARVN Infantry. It got wrapped around a tree. :cuss:

I would never go into combat with a carbine -- I don't care if Audie Murphy did like it.

WildAlaska,
the M1 carbine would be an even better gun, a more tactical QCB, with the ability to feed it special purpose, socom subsonic ammo. This would make it easier for an operator to establish a perimeter around any Terr's sandbox. Needs a little work to accomodate ergonomic features such as lasers and high lumen lights. Especially if you have to Tango with a merc who has set up a bivvy in urban combat.

This is a great thread that will not die. IIRC, M1 Carbines run around $500 and mags are cheap, and widely available. So what's the best carbine option these days? The IMI newbies? A used GI model?

MrMurphy
March 1, 2005, 11:20 PM
Vern, I know guys who used the original M1 and then the M2 and most agreed the M2 had more reliability problems and the full auto switch should have stayed on the designer's page and never made it to production.... and the 30 round mag design didn't help.

Audie always used the original M1 and 15 rounders, so I guess his experience was different. His was also probably new and not a 2-war vet before he got it.

Mr. Humphry, I've read your posts on the M1 Carbine being wrapped around a tree, and am intriguided- was it done with explosives or something?
----------------------------------

It was done by swinging the gun by the muzzle, with all the muscle I could put behind it.

All the comments about the M2 being unreliable and the carbines being worn are true. But once I wrapped that POS around a tree, I bummed an M1 off the ARVN, and it was reliable -- and it had been through two wars, too.

The carbine wasn't a weapon that you could rely on -- it wouldn't put a man down. As I say, Audie Murphy was with other Americans, so if he didn't put a German down, one of the men in his platoon could do the job. I was with ARVN -- and couldn't rely on that kind of help.

The M1 is better at putting a man down, and it will shoot through things (the enemy tended to hide, you know.)

I took a 30 carbine to Louis Awerbucks Carbine/Pistol ll class. It performed perfectly. I used WWB fmj ammo, a loopie scout scope on a forward mount with a stock peep backup. Mine was made by IMI and was sold for $399 on sale at Trader's Sports in San leandro, CA. You might try Kahr for a good shooter. GI models are best but are expensive. The 30 rd mags I had in my collection worked perfectly although they were discolored with surface rust in the wrappers after so many years. They were manufactured in the 70's by FN. These mags are marked AYN on the front in italic type script. The regular 15 rd mags are preferred by most people.
Most of the carbines were AR platform and many failed to function in the dust of California's central valley. The 30 M1 was superb!

I have a great deal of respect for the M1 Carbine. I have two USGI carbines, and one old Universal.
I do not think much of the Carbine round for hunting, but for "social work", the carbine and the .30 round are pretty good.

The M1 is an excellent close-quarters tool, and much preferable to virtually all pistols many gun folks claim they would grab in an emergency.

The M1 Carbine is what the M-16 should have been; now, if we could just get one in 6.5x39mm, we'd be set.

Sounds like you had a frustrating experience with the carbine and our RVN allies. I served May67/May68 196thLIB I Corps as a 106 gunner. Were you with a USMC CAC Team or Army?

I was an adviser with 18th ARVN Division in III Corps from mid-66 to mid-67. (My battalion was 4/48 ARVN Infantry.) I was a company commander (A-1/61 IN) in the 1st Bde, 5th ID (OPCON to 3rd MarDiv) from mid-68 to late-69. That's in I Corps, right on the DMZ.
