This weekend my buddy and I shot our M4geries at night for the first time to test how well our flash suppressors work. I was fully expecting his "Izzy flash suppressor" to be a little better than my A2. After all, it is longer and appears to be similar in design to the phantom which is supposedly better than the A2.
Suprise suprise, his rifle was throwing HUGE blinding fireballs while mine was flashing waaaaaay less. We were both using Federal XM193 from the same lot number. We didn't have a plain muzzle AR to compare against but I have seen still images of plain muzzle ARs at night and they looked just like his.
Needless to say, my buddy is pissed! This thing is welded on to the end of his barrel. He is thinking of calling Bushmaster and demanding another barrel since they specifically advertised his rifle as having a flash suppressor. I told him he might have a valid point. What do you all on this forum think? Also, does anybody else here own this muzzle device and if so, have you found similar results?
Thanks for your input.

Purchased my 14.5in M4 barrel w/ perm attached Izzy muzzle brake(was represented as such---and this was before the ban expired)----compared to my 16in plain barrel there is a HUGE difference in the flash----tried this at almost full dark night at a friend's farm.
If your friend isn't happy---by all means get it changed----but the Izzy muzzle brake DOES suppress flash.

Hmm, sounds like we need to find somebody in the area with a plain muzzle and do a side by side comparison.
Another thing I thought of is that they may have accidentally given him the Izzy muzzle break. My understanding is that they have been drilling out the break to make the FH so I can see how somebody could make that mistake if they look identical from the outside.
How big is the internal diameter of your Izzy MB?

Nick, what ammo were you using?

IMHO, they use the Izzy on those M4 barrels simply because they are long enough to meet the 16" minimums, not because they actually perform any better.
And if it's a post ban barrel, it's not a flash hider anyway. Those were evil.

Using Federal XM193. From the same lot #.
He bought the rifle at the same time I got mine. Right after the ban ended.
The rifle he got was:
this one (http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/bcwa3f14m4iz.asp)
It clearly says that it has the "Izzy flash suppressor" That's why he bought it. He wanted maximum evilness! And also to be able to use it for pest control on his land after dark.
After looking at the accessories section of the Bushmaster site and noticing that they don't offer an Izzy FS, I am beginning to think they just relabeled their MB to sell the stock they had on hand. Either that or it is a "combo device" they were illegally selling prior to the end of the ban.

Wasn't comparing my Izzy to a regular suppressor---but the comparison was to a plain barrel that was slightly longer.

I suppose since I haven't done the side by side comparison to a naked muzzle yet I should rephrase my comments.
I can't actually say that it doesn't suppress flash at all.
I will say I was very, very disappointed in its performance compared to the shorter A2 FS.

whats that a 14.5 inch barrel with a soldered on 1.5 inch device
vs a 16 inch threaded barrel?
February 28, 2005, 10:24 PM
You have a 20 inch A2 and he has a 14.5 M4gery, with an Izzy attached? I assume those stats are correct. If so, the flash is going to be more on the shorter rifle. What might have little or no flash in, say, a 26 inch barrel will suddenly look and sound like the Wrath of God in a 14.5 inch barrel. Just witness a 91/30 and an M44 shot side by side.
Your buddy should try comparing his rifle to an M4gery with the Bird Cage. I think he might find that the Izzy does better than you think.
February 28, 2005, 11:08 PM
I WAS shooting an M4gery with a birdcage.
Mine has a custom barrel that is something like 14.7" to bring it out to 16" with perm attatched A2.
I seriously doubt that the 1/5" difference in length is the culprit.

Now that is a horse of a different color. On an interesting note it says "Izzy flash suppressor" on the page you linked to, but in the "accessories" section it says "Izzy brake". False advertising or a different model?

That's what I'm wondering.
If somebody who bought an Izzy break before the end of the ban would measure the inside diameter of their break I could compare it to my friend's "flash suppressor" and see if they are really different.
My gut tells me they are selling breaks as suppressors.

Take a look at their "electronic catalog". (Adobe Acrobat needed) They list both the Izzy Flash Suppressor/Brake and the Izzy Brake and give a pretty detailed description.
It looks like all of their updating is done to the electronic catalog now and not to their online catalog. For example, take a look at the Modular Carbine in the electronic catalog. It shows and mentions that an A2 flash hider is offered. The online catalog section does not have these updates.
