Typical WM 94 groupings

I broke down and cleaned my grandfathers winchester model 94 for him a few months back, which I think he never cleaned in 20 years.

After the debris settled, I took it out to sight it in. I 'centered' the group it made, but it was shooting about a 4"-6" group at 50yrds (farthest i can shoot with open sights, due to my cursed eyes). Now, I didnt expect this thing to be a sub MOA tack driver, but my grandpappy has taken dozens and dozens of deer with this old thing (back in day when you hunted year round to eat). Is it possible that I did something to screw it up, or is this to be expected of a battered old deer rifle? I never bothered to shoot it before i cleaned it out.

It's not really a critical issue because my gramps is too old to hunt now, but I still wonder...

A WM94 should be cabable of 4 inch groups at 100 yards. Have someone with good eyes shoot it.

Something to think about. Any rifle that will place it's shots into 6 inches at the longest range that you will shoot at is adequate for deer hunting.

The reason many people want pinpoint accuracy at 500 yards is because they aren't good enough hunters to get any closer.

Perhaps your grandfather was a good enough hunter that he didn't need to shoot over 50-75 yards. If that's the case, the rifle was certainly adequate for him.

And BTW: Cleaning a weapon IS NEVER a mistake!!

you may have a point cheygriz

It definately could be my eyes, but I only know one other person who owns firearms, and can use a sight. I guess ill have to track em down.

Maybe i should put another box of ammo through it, just to break the old girl back in. I think the shock of gun-scrubber and copper solvent may have thrown her for a loop!

Like cheygriz said, its probably a function of shooter and not gun. When I got my first AR I was used to scoped bolt actions. "This gun stinks, I can only shoot 8" at 100 yards!" Well, lucky for me, turned out I just needed to practice with it. :)

I had a win 94 that I never got to shoot better than 4-5" at 100 yards. I sold it because my feeling is that if I can shoot better than my rifle can, its not worth keeping. In reality though a win 94 is a really good short range hunting rifle.
