I found this article on the Minneapolis Star Tribune. I wonder what it would be like to have a lot of Kangaroos in WI?? I wonder if there would be a season or if we could just shoot them on sight like hogs.

Kangaroo found in Wisconsin still a mystery

DODGEVILLE, Wis. -— Authorities in southern Wisconsin have discovered that capturing a kangaroo in a snowstorm isn't the hard part. It's finding out where the animal came from.

Authorities recently gave up their hunt for the owner of a red 130-pound marsupial, saying its origin will remain a mystery.

The Iowa County Sheriff's Office has given the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison permission to keep the kangaroo, nicknamed Roo. The animal has been in quarantine at the zoo since its capture early January.

Sheriff's deputies corralled the male kangaroo in a barn after receiving calls from shocked residents who had seen it hopping through rural parts of Dodgeville for two days.

"We're almost two months out since the incident occurred. I would imagine that the owner is not coming forward,'' Iowa County Sheriff Steve Michek said.

Michek said deputies ruled out several claims of ownership, including one from a Connecticut woman who said her kangaroo was missing. An Appleton, Wis., man also claimed he had lost a kangaroo in September, but his description did not match that of the animal.

Zoo officials plan to introduce the marsupial, which has been deemed healthy, to their other five kangaroos this spring when the weather warms up.

They lured it into the barn with apples,

so shouldn't his name be apples?

Maybe he migrated, and we have to start protecting the migratory kangaroo...

Heck of a story. Also funny that there are kangaroo owners out there whose pets are "missing". I mean...how do you lose a kangaroo? Better yet, how do you NOT lose a kangaroo? 10 foot fences?

Interesting.

The Kanga ain't the last of it! My WI buds tell me that recently in Walworth Co. there have been verified sightings of a Rocky Mt. Bighorn ram. A game warden, no less, reported that he first thought, "Yeah, Right!" then he went out and spotted it himself.

Wonder what's next for that neck of the woods? Oryx? Chamois?
Cape Buffalo???

Had a report like that a year or so ago around here. After someone reported it, 2-3 other people came forward and said that they had seen the 'roo too, but kept quiet for fear of getting a reputation as a drunk...

We've had cases of perfectly sober deer hunters around here spotting free roaming emu's in the woods! Wonder what the local predators think?

Just South of Indianapolis in Morgan County, they capture an emu who had been running amongst the hills and hollers of Morgan County. Department of Natural Resources said these things can go 40 mph.

Wonder if DNR will make us use shotguns for emu? :D

Just a bit south of where I live, around Quitman, Arkansas, african lions were spotted roaming the woods. The Sheriff's posse went out and killed 5 of them.

Now that's scary! No way I want to meet up with an African lion while out for a hike! :what:

That's basically what happened. Local people, out and about on their property spotted them.

There is a big cat shelter nearby, and the guy who operates that was accused -- but all his cages were full, and there was no break in his fences. His theory was someone who wanted to get rid of some lions found he was full up and just dumped them. So far as I've heard, they don't know who did it.

Is this a case of unidentified, roaming, second-hand lions?? :D

I understand when they catch the guy who dumped them, among the charges he'll face will be copyright infringement. :p

Come down into the swamps in Louisiana... There is no telling what you're liable to see! I've seen Javalina's, a Boa Constrictor and what we "thought" was an Anaconda. Also seen/heard a black panther (that is one eerie scream). :what: Lots of stuff "falls" off boats coming up the Mississippi into New Orleans.
