Picked up my first gun today after a 10 day California-imposed wait. Ruger Service Six, in .357 Magnum. Shot it today, shoots great. I do need to get some better grips, because .357 mags are a little rough with those stock ones.
And yes, I know the top of a washing machine isn't the greatest place to take pictures of a gun :)

Ya know - it is way too easy for the likes of me to dismiss that ''first gun'' excitement - until I think back! Yes - I am gettin ancient! :p

If however I do think back to my Model 27 Smith I can once more taste that shere thrill - - I had some rifles but that first handgun - well - it was close to ecstasy! Getting to shoot it too - was an equally rewarding experience.

So - once I have this image in mind from long ago - I can indeed share your thrill of ownership ... and pleasure... and it is good, is it not. I am pleased for you and hope you enjoy not just this but other guns you may be able to aquire in future.

Have fun, keep it clean, shoot straight, be safe and it should serve you well! Be careful though, guns reproduce very quickly.

GeekwithA.45,

I went to your site, thanks for the tribute to Mark Wilson, we in the DFW area also know that he is a hero.....and miss him. I hope and pray that we all make the correct decision if called to use our weapon in protection of our loved ones or others...........

dasmi - no pics showing - and looking at the pic url's they don't look like they will show. The .jpg ref is followed by a ? and then a load of other stuff ... well, they don't show for me! I did see them first time round tho.

Now they don't work! ARG! Let me see what I can do.

I think the only reason you may have seen them is they were cached on your puter. I put one of those URL's into IE on its own and got error 404.

That ought to do it.

Check out eBay or Gunbroker for a good deal. In my opinion, these make great replacement grips for Rugers. I have pretty small paws, so I went with the Pachy Compac. -MV

(doing my best imitation of the voice of the evil emperor from Flash Gordon - and taking a few liberties with the scripted dialogue. . .)

"Pathetic newbie! If you understood anything about the true nature of the universe of gun owners you would have cowered from it in terror! Look at you! Now will come holsters, new grips, professional instruction - more guns of different makes and calibers, and then - reloading!"

(insert evil laugh here)

Great choice! Congratulations!

Another flame lit in the darkness of california, great choice for a first handgun. May you do as well in all your other purchases. :)

[Hawkman laugh] Good choice, Flash! :D

[Dale voice] Oh, Flash, you've saved the universe again, with your Ruger .357.

Nice piece. You should be very happy with it. (Sorry about the Flash Gordon stuff, it's Trisha's fault). :uhoh: :D

Congrats dasmi...enjoy it all....most of all be safe....I can't barely remember my first handgun...but it was very exciting...I was just re-activated into the gun world a few years ago after a long break. All my guns had been long gone except for one. Long divorce, kids etc...Friend of mine gave me a gift of Beretta 92FS and I have been reassimilated to the gun fever of old. I now need to get another gun safe... mack

Oh you're in trouble now. Now you're going to want one of each six series Ruger ever made - both stainless steel and blued. Then you'll want a GP 100 and then will come S&W, Taurus, Colt, and so on. Of course you'll soon realize that a 22 is very cheap to shoot so that's another one. Eventually rifles and shotguns will come into your world as well. Probably you'll decide that with a .357 revolver (my favorite caliber) you NEED a Marlin or Winchester in .357. Yep and then gunsafes and reloaders will join your world. You're hammered. Welcome to the club.

Oh by the way I still own my first rifle. I was a birthday gift from my father in 1982. Hold on to your Ruger. If for no other reason then for sentimental reason - plus that's a real nice little revolver. You should get years of use out of it.

Excellent choice for a first gun! I have a stainless Service Six myself.

I suggest that unless you have a lot of prior experience with handguns, do most of your practicing with standard level .38 Specials. They will have a lot less blast and flash, so you won't be too distracted when working on learning how to shoot well. Heck, I've been shooting handguns for over 10 years and I still prefer shooting .38s over .357s.

I'll echo the suggestion from some other members to replace the grips. Pachymars work well, as do the Butler Creek Combat Grips. They'll make the gun a lot more comfortable to shoot, especially with magnums.

The Ruger Service Six is a Security Six with Fixed sights or a Speed Six with a square frame. I am a fan of the Ruger Six Series, the SS Speed Sixes are my favs. You have a fine revolver there that could last you you the rest of your life. Hogue makes a nice grip for these guns that I like better than the Pachmyers.

You have a gun that quite possibly is the "do it all gun". It can do just about anything that you ask of it. There are better guns for specific uses but very few guns can do as much as a 4" bbl .357 mag revolver. The Six Series is roughly a S&W K-frame size so it is not too big and not to little. Also these are the only revolver that can actually be field stripped. All you need is a coin or screwdriver to ge the grips off and the rest of the gun can be taken apart with no tools.

If you don't have an owner's manual, call Ruger and they will send you out one for free.
