I heard that in some of the post 1990 Rem 870's, you can't put on any mag extensions. Is this true?

No, it just takes more work to get them to work right. Remington started putting "dimples" in the mag tube that would stop you from loading more than the stock length of mag tube. Why they started this, I have no idea. To get around it you must carefully grind away the "dimples" from within the tube allowing the shells to go past and into the extension.

This is true of all recent Express models except for the 5077, which has the factory mag extension, ball detent, and no dimples.

No dimples on the 20ga Express's either.

I put a mag extension on my Remington 870 made around 1997.

I used a drill bit to drill out the dimples, and then sanded the drilled out parts to smooth them enough to allow the shells to feed smoothly.

It sounds a lot tougher and more complicated than it actually is.
