I have a 1967 vintage Colt AR-15 Sport model that I inherited from my Dad. Is there an online source that explains the field stripping procedure? Thanks in advance.

Get yourself a bottle of CLP and a pipe cleaner and you're all set.

Thanks Mike. Should have looked a little harder, I found the AR15 site a few minutes ago.

Here's another good manual in PDF form that you can download. It's for the M16A1, but it's pretty much the same rifle.

Take note of the password near the top and scroll down to M16A1 Operators Manual - TM 9-1005-249-10

thats a classic SP1 configuration for an AR

no mag fence on the button
Threaded front pin head
no foreward assist
no case deflector
3 prong flash hider

not a mention of "Sporter"

it will have a 1/12 twist and might keyhole longer projectiles

Another sure fire sign of it being a real early SP1 model is the small "pilot holes" in the center of the shaft of the safety selector on both sides.

These early safety selectors were machined from stock, and these pilot holes are artifacts from that machining. Later safety selectors are investment cast and secondarily machined, and lack the pilot holes.

That rifle was born the same year as I was. They don't make 'em like that anymore and hadn't for quite some time. Your dad took very nice care of it. A nice added bonus that his name was stamped on it. You definately need to keep it in as nice condition and hand it down to your kids.

Zero it in at 50 yards with the IBZ (http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/improvedbattlesightzero.msnw) or 25 meters for the traditional M16A1 zero (http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/officialm16m16a1zeromethod.msnw) and I'll bet it will shoot really nice with some 55gr. Winchester Q3131A.

Thanks for sharing the pics with us. :)

According to the link H. Tuttle posted, since it has a 1 in 12 twist barrel, this barrel does not do well with heavier weight ammo. Should I shoot lighter weight bullets for accuracy?

AR-15's of this vintage do best when firing bullets of 55 grains or lighter. The 1 in 12 twist is not suitable for stabilizing longer/heaver bullets. Commercial ammo that approximates the old US Mil. M193 ball ammo round would be ideal for this gun for general use.

For better accuracy, some 52 grain hollow points might be the ticket, but at a higher price.

55gr. is the most common anyway. You can probably pick up some 55gr. USA223R1 Winchester Whitebox valuepack cheap at your local Walmart or sporting goods store and it's pretty decent range ammo.

If you want more accuracy, you can also try some 52gr. or 55gr. Black Hills, 55gr. Hornady TAP or 52gr. PMC Silver from here: http://www.midwayusa.com/

However, with open sights, you probably won't appreciate the difference. Even cheap surplus and valuepack ammo can get 2-3MOA in a good condition AR.
