View Full Version : I want a big gun

The bizarre, though not unwelcome, portion of the Missouri CCW law is the provision that allows anyone to carry a loaded handgun in their car. My county of residence was the last one to actually start issuing carry permits last month, but I have kept handguns in the consoles of my car and truck since the law was passed. Limited by what was on hand, and what I was willing to put in something enclosed only by glass, I have been rolling around with a 2" Smith M10 and a Makarov.

Since a car based handgun would not be limited by the size or weight of a comfortable carry gun, and I'm 6' 2" with big hands, I'm thinking big gun. Witness 10mm? CZ97? Glocks are out for me. Anything bigger than a 9mm Glock takes the skin off the web of my hand.

I take it you're in Jackson County then? I'm due south of ya in Cass, used to live in Clay, so I drive through Jackson all the time.

Anyways, I would supposed that your only limitation would be where you're going to hide a Big Gun in your truck. I have a Jeep Wrangler with a pretty spacious, rather secure, center console. But, I still just keep my SP101 in there, mainly for when I can't carry it for some reason, ie Work, Kansas, etc.

I wouldn't want to keep an expensive gun in the vehicle, just because of break in risk. Be bad enough to have a .357 taken. Would be even worse if it was my Mark I Desert Eagle that got snatched along with the stereo, GPS, CD Collection, etc.

Jub, you must live in KC...Jackson county? I live in Belton...Cass county. I haven't taken advantage of applying for a CCW, as I still have mixed thoughts concerning it. I was unaware that it allowed a person to carry a loaded weapon within their vehicle, I'll have to go take a look at the text on the net. But, I'd still have some concerns about keeping a loaded weapon in the car when crossing the state line...Kansas still doesn't have concealed carry on the books, and a loaded gun inside a car is a definite faux pas over there.

Having said all that, if it's a big gun you like, the CZ97 would certainly fill the bill. That is one big honkin' .45. The 10mm Witness is also very large, but I think the caliber might be a bit much, especially if you're inclined to go full power. I have fairly large hands, but they're rather slender, and I think I'd prefer something along the lines of a Beretta 96 or a CZ75B in .40 for an autopistol, or just a plain old .38 or .357 snubbie loaded with 125 +P JHP's, that I could just draw and pull the trigger. Best of luck with your decision...

I don't remember seeing anything about it having to be a handgun. Pistol grip 18.5" shotty? They can be had cheap and are very effective. A little big for swinging around in the vehicle. Limiting it to handguns, I'd have to say the cheapest used Ruger you can find in the biggest caliber you can find. I got a 454 SRH in "good" condition for $350 after looking for about 6 years ;)

My SRH has a 7.5" bbl and behaves itself well in the car but it's "only" a 44 mag. Very ergonomic for me.

Desert Eagle .50.

Actually for a carry gun I'd want an HK. I have an .40. I really wanted the .45, but my hands aren't big enough to effectively shoot a double stack .45. The .45 is a great round, it has proven it's stopping power, and is common enough you can buy ammo everywhere! I say the HK because I have friends with large hands that use the HK with no problems, and it's a gun that will always go bang when you need it too. I just don't care for Glocks.

I saw on shooting USA that there was a 1911 variant coming out that would use a .50cal. If you're into that big of a slug.

What's is wrong with what you have? If your car gets broken into and the guns taken, they will be cheap to replace.

MO law may allow a loaded gun in the car, but if the gun gets stolened, what are the legal issues? If it was in a crime.

larryf1952 - You're in Belton? I'm in Belton!

BTW, the CCW permit has nothing to do with vehicle carry. Any MO resident over the age of 21 that can legally own a weapon can carry the legally owned weapon loaded and concealed (ie in the glove box, console, etc) in their car.

The vehicle carry issue is what opened the door to get CCW. It used to be that MO residents couldn't have a gun in their vehicle, unless it was locked up in the trunk, and the ammo was seperated. Made it hard to even go to the range, legally. YET, if you were just passing through, as a visitor, you could have your CCW on your belt, whatever.

Kansas, yes. Whole other world right over there. They are working on getting some of their gun laws a bit more sensical and consistant to help pave the way for another attempt at CCW there.

for the MO residents, and excellent forum is: http://www.missouricarry.com

I carry a Kimber Ultra Tactical in my Truck at all times. For the matter of going into Kansas. I have purchased a cash register safe.( you can get them for under $20 @ Wal-Mart) It fits under the seat of my truck. Line it with some foam. Now when I am unfortunate enough  that I have to cross over into Jayhawk country I unload the pistol and lock it in the safe. I carry most of the time but the other gun is always in my truck.

Some time back one of the gun writers polled his readers for the best car gun. The overwhelming choice was a fairly short barrelled big bore revolver, non-ported, for several reasons.

1. Durability and reliability, especially at close quarters where the slide of a semi may be against your chest or the gun may be grabbed by a bad guy.

2. Power. Big bullets.

3. Mostly subsonic, probably a benefit in an enclosed car.

4. Short barrel to make it easy to maneuver in the car; non ported for obviousl reasons.

The choices were mostly Smiths, Rugers, or Tauruses in .44 special, .45 ACP, or .45 Colt.

Desert Eagle .50...

Heck, you could scare criminals half to death with the sight of one of those and all the way with the report.

Kamicosmos and LarryF, I too live in Belton.

I don't think you should keep a gun in your car all the time because it could get stolen. I can't wait till I'm 23!!!

I have fairly large hands and find the CZ 75B to fit VERY nicely. Frankly I went from an XD9 4" to the full size 75BD as a carry gun. It just feels better to me, and I can actually hit what I aim at with it.

For a "car gun" went the other way. I figure if one is ever car-jacked you are going to be at contact range with a person trying to sit in the same seat you are. At that distance it can be hard to get a large gun inbetween the two of you and I don't like the idea of having to swing a long barrelled gun around in such a confined space. I think a 2" model10 is one of the best choices possible. 38special is adequate and anything bigger is going to awfully nasty if you have to fire it in the car.

With the Bushmaster pistol, at close range, you can not only shoot the BG but barbecue him at the same time. :D

I'd be leary of leaving an expensive pistol in the car all of the time. The CZ-52 is about the best price available, but your Makarov kind of covers that area.

TMM,
As far as I know, it's a .50 BMG revolver. I don't know anything about it (who made it, if it really shoots, etc.) But, it sure is a big gun!

If all else failed, that .50BMG handgun could certainly be a pretty darn good impact weapon

Other than Andre the Giant, I don't know of anybody who's got the hand size and strength to use it. I'm sure not gonna try it! :what:

If you can shoot that monster, I'm not messing with you anyway.

(Don't really take this seriously ...)

I think it is Guns Magazine's most recent issue which reviews the EAA Thor, a single-shot handgun in 45-70. One well-placed shot ought to enable you to bring down even the largest vehicles on the road today.

I too have big hands and have looked for large handled handguns. I believe the CZ 97B is an excellent choice. The Witness .45 is a good second stringer for this. I had one in wonderfinish that I absolutely loved and hated to get rid of. However, if you ever have problems with the gun (and a few people have), EAA can be a pain to deal with. Another choice may be a CZ 40B. The handle extends down to end evenly with the magazine baseplate. Of course, this is more for wider hands with normal to slightly longer length fingers. And the used HK .45 double stack that I tried at my local gunstore fit me like a glove. Too bad I have fundage problems at the moment, or I'd have picked it up. (~$650?)

Good luck
