Anyone ever wonder why Ruger has never made a pump action combat shotgun? I have.

First Ruger isn't exactly known as the combat firearms goto company by politics and products.

Second Ruger is a very good company in terms of business decisions. How exactly do you compete against the 870 and 590 in terms of PD purchases not to mention that the Benelli Nova has taken a reasonable chuck of the market.

So basically I just don't think it would be very economical for Ruger to pursue this unless they could make it at a pricepoint equal to or lower than the Mossberg but make it better than an 870 and I just don't think that is possible to do while still making a profit.

Probably for the same reason why Bill Ruger for so long resisted making double-action revolvers and autopistols. He had the impression that only "sporting" guns were respectable. Apparently, he changed his mind or needed added income...

Also, there is terrible competition from Remington, Mossberg, etc. It would have to be really special to compete. His double -barrelled shotguns have relatively little to fear from other companies, at their price point. And they are "respectable".

P.S. Cslinger: Sorry, our posts crossed. Guess we said about the same thing.

The market is saturated with proven decades-old designs. In addition, chinese, russian, turkish, and others are being sold at prices no American mfg. can compete with.

Ruger would have to come up with a design MORE durable than an 870/590 AND sell it for the same or less than a chinese/etc. import...ain't going to happen.

"no responsible citizen needs a shotgun that holds more rounds than a bicycle has wheels.."?

"no responsible citizen needs a shotgun with a barrel shorter than a '78 Buick Skylark..."?

okay how about, "no responsible citizen needs a shotgun that doesn't go with my LL Bean vest..."

I figure one of these (very fictional) Bill Ruger quotes is probably the reason.

even if Ruger announced that they were going to make a combat shotgun (whatever that really means) you wouldn't see it for another 5 years
