I finally got around to sending Smith and Wesson the details on my great-grandfather's revolver. I'll post a scan of the letter tomorrow, but here's the last paragraph.
We have researched your Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 First Change, caliber .38 S&W Special and US Service Cartridge, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 75xxx, was shipped from our factory on March 13, 1906 and delivered to Norvell Shapleigh Hardware Co., St. Louis, MO. The records indicate that this handgun was shipped with a 5 inch barrel, blue finish, and checkered non-medallion walnut grips.
I posted asking for details about the gun about 6 months ago, and I thank everyone who helped out. It is still in perfect working order. The blue finish has seen better days, but it still has the 5" barrel and original grips.
