Assuming Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN) national reciprocity bill passes and becomes law, what would be a good defensive caliber/round to carry in places where hollowpoints are prohibitted?

there are places that prohibit HP's?
You learn something everyday.

Just a WAG, but I'd think .45ACP FMJ or .45Colt/.44spl Lead round nose?

I'm thinking a decent FMJ round in 45ACP, or maybe Federal's Expanding Full Metal Jacket.
Another choice might be something like a 45 Colt or 44 Spl/Mag revolver with those very soft lead "cowboy" loads.
AirForceShooter, there are a couple of states that ban HP ammo for us unwashed masses...uh average Jon & Jan Q. Private-Citizen...NJ being one, IIRC

Federal's EFMJ works very well. Second choice would be big bore ,44 or 45 with a SWC. SWC is much better than RN.

You're right. I have RN on the brain. Just ordered a bunch or round nose for my Rodeo and Marlin. LSWC would be better.

sorry to report there are places where hollow points are "Verboten".
Right here in the land that freedom forgot, you can only us them in your
home or at the range .

Probably a hard cast 158gr lead semi wadcutter from a .357 mag

115grfmj, NJ is exactly the state that I'm thinking about since I have to drive in there two or three times a week. What is the penality? $1,000 fine per HP found? Or, something like that.

mete has it down, the efmj round sounds like your best bet. IIRC, Magsafe had a FMJ round that was lightweight and frangible.

Besides the EFMJ loads already mentioned, (http://www.ammoman.com/40_EP_DESC.htm) you might check out the Corbon Powerball. (http://mysite.elixirlabs.com/index.php?uid=12665&page=1607) .

My definition of an optimist - a guy who is planning his non-hollowpoint alternatives for New Jersey carry on an out-of-state permit.

FMJ out of a .45 is really impressive, or I'd carry a .44 special with Lead SWCs.

which means that it's punishable by a term up to 1 year in prison in the
great state of nj. Or so a leo friend tells me. Even though you technically
are allowed to posess them in your home or the range, a lot of us here
don't bother since the laws are open to "interpretation" by the local PD.
Which means you may be proven innocent in the long run, but you'll
probably be arrested, and spend thousands on a good attorney. For me
my defense round is Rem. 125gr "JSP" out of my 686. Not the best but
I could do worse. My advice stay in the lehigh valley, your better off.

Wadcutters. Soft lead. If you can get your auto to feed them, all the better.
That link is easily the answer to every single "what's the best" question ever asked on here. :D

Well, so far as I know, there is not enough of a difference to matter.
You might search www.tacticalforums.com if you want an indepth explanation.

... My advice stay in the lehigh valley, your better off ... After living in the Garden State for nearly four decades, I know that I'm better off in Lehigh Valley :) However, I still have personal and professional reasons requiring me to drive across the river.

Oh yeah, there are those expanding FMJ out there. Are they any good?

EFMJ - if the regulation specifically forbids HP, EFMJ (and corbon Pow'r'ball) technically aren't HP.
I forget if PRNJ 's law is just about HP, or all expanding ammo.
If expanding of all kinds is verboten, I'd go with .45 hardball - I love 9x19, but 9x19 FMJ has way too much penetration for CCW, in my opinion.

"....45ACP FMJ..." Geezuz, no. FMJ's, even out of a .45, aren't reliable fight stoppers. Despite all the rhetoric. A 230 grain swaged or cast flat point would do nicely. There used to be a semi-jacketed non-hollow point 230 grain bullet too, but I can't for the life of me find them.
