First impressions of the SA XD9 Sub Compact...

Like every other current and former SA XD owner I have been on the look out for the new XD9 Compact.

Well, today I finally got my chance to look and fondle one.

Looks wise the compact is exactly the same as its parent the XD9 only in a reduced size package.

I was very disappointed in the grip length of the gun, as my ring finger did not just naturally curl under the mag like on my Glock 27. I feel that the grip is more for 2-1/2 of my fingers.

The second thing that I really didn't care for was how muzzle heavy the slide felt. The gun felt a lot heavier than my 27 and most of its weight seemed to be way out front on the slide.

Being a former owner and huge supporter of the XD series of guns, I am glad I didn't wait for this "compact" carry gun.

Now if I were 6'5" and 300+ lbs with huge hands (I'm 5'11" and 195lbs) I may feel different about this gun as a CCW. No on second thought, I'd just carry my Glock 19.

A big two thumbs down from me as a carry gun. It may shoot great, but that ain't what it's for....

Oh yeah, the asking price was $429..

I too had the chance to check one out at a local shop this weekend. Had the same experience as you did. Gun felt a bit muzzle heavy and wasnt nearly as comfortable as a G26. I'm NOT a fan of Glocks either. Don't own one....probably never will. It just feels like they took an XD-9 and chopped the bottom half of the grip off and shortened the barrel. They made no effort to scale the gun down at all. It appears the SW99 compact is going to be the same way.

Dissapointing.

I saw one. It was a nice gun, but seemed a little fat to carry easily. Compared to a Glock 26, the Glock seems to me that it would be a bit easier to conceal, but the XD appeared very solid and well made.

The sub-compact is neat, but I personally would rather have the 4" model.

I haven't got to see one yet but I am disapointed in what I am hearing hear becauuse I really would like to get one. I have the 4 in XD 40 and love it.

Guess I won't lose any sleep about getting a Kahr MK9 instead... ;)

The XD9 Sub-Compact isn't even close to being as small as a Kahr MK9, but of course the XD holds 10+1.

The XD is not a pocket pistol by any means, but a nicely made gun. I like the XD9 sub-compact, but I don't really see much of an advantage over the 4" model.

Not impressed at all.....the grip is too short, it feels heavy, looks thick and clunky.

Compact Polymer still goes to the Glock 26/27 for me.

Wouldn't mind seeing a P99 compact at some point. :o

Personally, Glocks have always felt crappy in my hand, but they generally shoot pretty well for me. I'm curious if anyone has actually shot the XD9 subcompact - being muzzle heavy may actually help with control.
