I've always had best luck with a wounded rabbit call. The higher-pitched cottontail call seems to work a bit better than the jackrabbit, even where you have both species.
I've used Burnham Brothers tapes with fair success, but I prefer the hand-held. "Just 'cause." :)

Me too-- i also use a howler for locating as well , but i'm a spot and stalk hunter, and u have to be careful with a howler-- many coyotes will come to it (and also makes a good call in that respect).

Curious to know thoughts on success with electronic calls. Any particular type or brand better over others?

Speaker quality seems to be the deal with any of the squaller boomboxes. After that, it's the selection of tapes.
I've used a little boombox, just set by the truck, with Burnham hurt-rabbit tapes. Cottontail works; maybeso a bit better than jackrabbit...
Never had any luck with baby woodpecker, baby goat or dominant-coyote tapes.

Serious coyote hunters that use electronic calls, and don't mind shelling out a few big bills, swear by the Foxpro Digital Callers (http://www.gofoxpro.com/main.htm).

The nice thing about the hand-held is that you can sit in a buddy's back yard in town and call--and fire up every dog inside a mile.
Been known to bring in housecats, too.

If you are going to get one of these calls, I would get a caller where the speaker is not right by you. The coyote will come right into the noise and they might be able to see you off eaiser.
