What might this be?

I bought this horse pistol while on a trip to gatlinburg TN. The man running the antique mall I bought it from claimed it was imported from japan and was capible of being fired. There seem to be no factory markings, and the only marks and writing seem to have been done with an engraver, and poorly done at that. Any Ideas..... ?

Well caps won't do you much good because it's a flintlock ... :neener:
It looks to me like something that was manufactured years ago using antique parts and locks. They were put together in Europe for sale to natives in Africa when they were prohibited from owning modern guns. It could be a genuine antique, but I couldn't prove it from the pictures.

Is the pan bronze? That's rather odd to me. Also, no ramrod. The single band that holds the barrel on looks rather odd. Not even a rudimentary front sight like some pistols had. Also look at the cock. It is suppose to be the Charleville Pattern but it's looks crude. The cutout should be a cleaner heart shape.
Still, if you got it at a good price and it's new, it'll make a nice shooter. Imagine bagging a burglar with one of those? :p

The marking on the barrel reads "G. W. Tyron, Philadelphia xxx 1812".
There was a G.W. Tyron who made guns in Philadelphia around that time, but they didn't look like that and it seems unlikely that he signed them with an electric pencil. I have no idea why someone would put that on the barrel; anyone who would believe it was an authentic Tyron marking would have to be even dumber - if that is possible - than the person who put it there.
I don't know the origin of the gun; it looks vaguely French, but it could be one of those Japanese replicas with a bit of age on it.

Wallhanger. I wouldn't trust that with a blank load. Pretty, but a wallhanger.
