Currently, I keep my Glock 19 with Trijicons near the bed in a Wilderness Tactical SafePacker, along with a Surefire G2 (65 Lumens).

I've had this pistol for about 3 years; it has digested many thousands of rounds and has proved 100% reliable with non-defective ammo. It's loaded with 15+1 rounds of Proload 124gr +P (Gold Dot), with a spare mag of 17.

'Course, as I get spoiled by my single-action semi-autos (BHP, CZ), I may change this choice in the future...

I tend to alternate them a little depending upon my mood.

Usually, I use my 3" S&W 65LS. Very handy and relatively easy to hide if you want to check out a noise without scaring someone if it is nothing. It is the revolver I've had the longest and the grips fit me perfectly so I'm very confident with it. It is a .357mag but I usually load it with .38spl or +Ps to avoid the magnum overpenatration issues.

Sometimes I use my 6"S&W 586. The longer barrel makes it a little less handy somewhat more cumbersome and impossible to hide if you may want to diffuse a situation that doesn't call for deadly force but that is somewhat made up for by the long barrel and great sight radius. Again, I don't use magnum rounds in the house. This is currently my favorite gun and I am more accurate with it than my others so I am very confident with it. When I get a 4" 586 and/or 686 I could see it displacing my 65LS as my primary HD gun (though if I move to a CCW state, or MD becomes one, the lighter K-frame 65LS would be my most often carry I think).

These guns are usually loaded with Speer Gold Dot +Ps (I don't actually remember the weight off hand, I think they are either 158s or 125s). Sometimes I even load them with regular .38spls (right now in addition to the Gold Dots I have a box of Fed HydraShoks in 110gr, and I like 158gr SWCs). I prefer (though as you see in the previous sentence, don't always use) heavier bullets. I feel these give more than adequate stopping power and greatly reduce the chances of overpenatration, a major consideration indoors, especially in your own house.

I sometimes use my Charles Daly 1911. It is the semi out of those I currently have that is my oldest and I love 1911s so I am very comfortable and confident with it. I think the .45acp (along with the .38+P) are just about perfect home defense rounds. Less overpenatration than many of the faster rounds and very good stopping power.

I use my CZ 75B sometimes too, though less often than the others. It is my favorite auto and until I got the 586 it was my favorite gun. I shoot it well (it was my most accurate until the 586 came). It fits my hand better than any of the others (though the 65LS and 1911 are very close). I really love this gun. However, the 9mm is a fast round and I'd be a bit more worried about both overpenatration and hearing damage than with the slower .45acp or .38spl/.38+P (not to mention muzzle flash issues in the dark- I want to keep my nightvision in case I don't stop the guy or even hit him the first time or if there is more than one).

I often have my Bersa loaded up next to one of these as well. It is a perfect size if I hear a noise I want to check out but don't think I will actually need it and just want it just in case (not all noises are necessarily an intruder- in the burbs its often a deer or raccoon). It is also the one that most often rides in my pocket during waking hours when I'm in the house.

I have a Great Dane snoring in the corridor. The last perp that got in screamed, tried to run and was slammed against the wall by my pet.

My only comment in German was "Dumm gelaufen. Du bleibst hier, bis Dich die Bullen holen."

*"Really not your day, huh? You'll stay here 'till the cops come and get you.")

The police that came almost went died from laughter when they saw my dog with his nose up to the private parts of that perp....

NONE. A sleepy person tends to demonstrate poor judgement. (Who did you wake up with this morning)? I live in a crime free area by choice, should the situation change I'd move. I take responsibility for my well being and refuse to have others dictate terms and conditions to me without due process!

Downstairs, I have a 1911 five inch gov't .45 ACP with 230 gr. FMJ hardball and tons of rounds there.

Shotgun also available as a 'last resort'. This used to be upstairs but the HK has things covered very well.

a 70lb Black Lab in my rack with me.

a Kabar slid into the slats of brother's former rack above mine (easy arms reach, but secure)...

And more often then not an M4A3 with an EoTech and a full 30 under an open bolt sitting on the rack above me. The way I see it is if I don't have to carry it around unless I'm in condition red, why hold myself to a handgun?

In the barracks, I just rely on the guard detail in the hall--but if it came down to it I'm sure I could mess someone up with my M1 drill rifle.

I live in a crime free area by choice, should the situation change I'd move.

There's no such thing as a crime free area, unless you're rich and have your own personal security guards to patrol. And, this may come as a surprise, but most of us ain't rich and can't afford to live in areas where we have our own armed guards. And if you don't have your own armed guards and you ain't rich, then you are not living in a crime free area.

When are you going to let her know?

I don't understand that sort of thing... young women are some of the only people with a real excuse for wanting a handgun all the time. Face it -- young women are targets in themselves. Me? Nobody is going to break down my door except to steal my stuff... and I don't have much stuff worth stealing so I'm pretty safe... but a 20yo fem, even if you think she is fat or something, even if she is totally and obviously broke and doesn't have an X-Box to her name, still faces the threat of rape. It's unbelievable that someone would raise a teenage girl without teaching her to shoot... maybe a dog-ugly teenage girl but probably not even then. Oh well.

I'll admit I once had a mauser, complete with bayonette, but that was long ago. Now everything is in the safe.

I'd be curious about what others who posted back in Dec. 2002 are currently using- how many of us have changed what we use.

Back then I mostly used my 3" S&W 65LS, next was my 6" S&W 586, then my Charles Daly 1911, and last my CZ 75B.

Now, none are used very often (though some occasionally just for a change). My S&W 65LS is spitting lead and has been put aside (I don't use it at the range or for defense) until I get around to getting it fixed. My 586 I just don't use much for anything anymore (I've become very fond of smaller guns). My Charles Daly has well over 10K rounds now and it was a cheap gun to begin with, while it is still pretty reliable (I just had to change out some worn out mags and it is fine again) I do worry about it since it was a gun make that is questionable when new (though mine's been a good gun). I do (very) occasionally load it up, but not often. The CZ, well I just don't use it nearly as much as I used to for anything, and I do prefer a revolver or a larger caliber these days.

So what do I usually have loaded up:

-Always: My Taurus PT140 Milennium Pro. I love this gun- 100% reliable, pretty accurate, comfortable. I often carry it when at home and I just don't bother unloading it unless I'm driving it to the range (in MD driving with a loaded gun in the car, even in the trunk, is a crime) or unless I'm cleaning it. It is a good size to hide away if I need to check something out but I am not sure there is an intruder (I live with a cat and my parents so any noise I hear at night is likely to have a legitimate explaination).

-Always: My Taurus 85CH. Same as above.

-Always: My S&W 442. I often carry it at home in a pocket and rarely unload it like the guns above. Thus, since it is ready anyway, and so easily tucked in a pocket to check out a noise, it is my first go to gun if I leave the room during the winter (I only wear PJs in the winter so it goes in the pocket, during the warmer months when I'm going to be in boxers the ability to go in a pocket doesn't matter so much, unless I take the time to put on pants).

-Occasionally: My 9mm SIG 226, my CZ, my Charles Daly and my S&W 586 (more or less in order of use). Very occasionally I use my .41mag S&W 57, I love the gun and caliber, but it is not a gun I'd want to lose if in a SD shooting and the cops confiscate it (it is from the 1st year these were made and in great condition- and it is my favorite gun).

-A possible addition: I can finally pick up my .40S&W SIG 229 on Friday after work. If it proves reliable it will probably be an always HD gun.
---
-Disappointment:
My Ruger KP345. I like the idea of .45ACP for HD- big and slow is at its best for HD, the noise isn't too sharp (important indoors) while still providing some stopping power. Rugers are supposed to be boringly reliable and nearly indestructable. The ergonomics are incredible. One of the main reasons I bought this gun was to be my main HD auto, plus it is barely small enough for CCW when that is an option (not often since I'm living in MD). However, it has been quite unreliable for me so far and even if it gets fixed I'm not sure if I'll ever quite trust it for HD.

-Non-gun HD: I always have a knife or two (fixed and folder) and I have a 105 lumens tactical flashlight, in this case a Streamlight TL-2, both kept where I can grab them without even getting out of bed.

i wish i could trust her but she is out of control, running with a bad crowd, and chances are it would disappear from the house (her giving it to one of her wanna be banger friends) and then someone gets shot with my gun ....i dont think so....and i am a very involved parent unfortunately her mom has let her run wild (court system screwed me and ultimately my daughter)....i would love to be able to share the joys of shooting and hunting with her. maybe someday when she grows up.

Wow..that's impressive. It looks like some of you guys have a full armory in a drawer. I have a serious question, do you guys have heavy hardwood doors with double bolts and bullet proof glass on your windows(lower level at least)? (I live on the second floor and I have sliding bolts on my doors) I figure the first thing to do if you want to protect your family is to prevent the guy from getting inside your house. I saw this guy on TV who packed a pistol for home defense and he had a sliding window door on the first floor! I was thinking jeez he better have bullet proofed that window or else of all things to invite someone to break in through.

Smith & Wesson 500 Magnum (4 inch) with Winchester Supreme 400gr silver tip hollow points. I have a special compartment. Just press a button and it slides out. With a pair of draws and shoes close by.
Learned about a week or so ago, at about 11:30 pm. By instinct, I grabbed it and gone outside to attend to an unwelcome, surprising visitor on my property. At the time I was not concerned if I had any attire on.
Yes sir, that would hurt, besides putting on one of the
best fireworks displays in town..I bet that was a sight
standing there in your BDay suit with that lil howitzer

All I have is my ole trusty Ser 80 GM with Golden Saber
185 HP's in it and the spare mag. Oh that along with
mid-size mouse traps at the windows and doors at
night. They make a pretty loud noise when sprung.

Yes, it does get fiery (first time I shot it at night). That’s because of the ports (sides and top) on the comp.
I only used one round. He was hiding behind a tree. I fired at the tree. Fortunate, for him, he (I guess) ducked to the side (last moment), unhurt… while getting up with his hands to his side, palms facing me. He said: “Wait! Wait!, my dog, I’m looking for my dog!” (I) didn’t say anything. While walking over to him, cocking the revolver, the guy takes a leap over the fence and takes off. At that point he’s not on my property anymore, and nothing in hands.
Yes, I got to hear (from my wife) about how I rushed out in the back with gun in hand, thinking your (I'm) “Adonis”.

Mossberg 500 holding 7 shells, 2 #7.5 turkey shells will cycle in first and then 5 00buck are waiting next in the magazine. I live in an apartment and like being able to choose not to take out a wall if the angle is bad, and I can just cycle out the #7.5's if I need to skip to the 00.

Also a 3 d-cell mag light, and whichever pistol I was carrying that day, either my Cheetah or my G27. Cheetah usually has 10 Golden Sabers in it and the Glock usually has 9 Federal Hydra-Shoks or Gold Dots, depending on what I ran out of at the range.

Edit: In the picture the black 12 gauge shells are the game loads and the red 2 3/4 shells are the 00 buck - you can also see the 3'' rifled slugs, but I just keep them around in case I need to take out a UFO or something. :)

Under the nightstand is a Mossy 500 with 18.5 inch barrel. When things go bump in the night, that is option number one.
