Just curious how the .50GI compares to the .45ACP in terms of effectiveness?

On what?
I have not seen any account of a .50 GI being used in a gunfight or even on game. I think it is an expensive gimmick. If I want more power than a .45 ACP, I have a .44 Magnum... and a rifle.

...or .45 Super in your current ACP reletively inexpensively.

While I like the idea of it, I can't see the .50 being anything more than a teeny tiny nitch that only a couple of folks own and have (to make) ammo for.

A little bit better ballistics on paper, and that nice 1/2" hole, but definetly not worth the $2.5k the pistol commands, nor the crazy cost of ammo.

For $2500, I can get a S&W 500Mag for about $900 + $450 (100 rds of ammo) + $900 another 500 and $225 rounds of ammo (50 rds) as back up. This would total around $2475. I would hunt around for some more money to get a couple of holsters.

That would satisfy my 50 caliber handgun itch for something reliable, powerful, and novel..........

I will stay with a 45ACP 1911 for sentimental reasons.

I'd guess it's twice the man stopper that the .45 ACP is. Look how much bigger the .50 is...

Do we really need a fighting handgun caliber, bigger than the 45 ACP?

Well, I cant say first hand..but Id imagine its a good stopper. If they could do a 50 AE in a 1911..........then.........Id be tempted. :D

Shoot well........

I would imagine that it would be superior as manstopper, just as many other rounds are. I find the gun interesting not from a combatative standpoint, but I would love to try one out on bowling pins in particular, and just about any reactive target in general.
