Don't use hard ball...I use 185 grain JHP's at 950 or better fps with from 6.1 to 6.6 grains of W-231 and a CCI 300 primer. Mind you...These are maximum loads and must be aproached with caution...

I use 6.1 grains of Unique (#12 Rotor on my Little Dandy)
CCI Lg. pistol primer
230 grain FMJ RN (either Winchester, Remington, or Hornady)
OAL=1.266
(I've also become a fairly recent convert to Lee Factory Crimp Dies.)

Every type of .45 ACP pistol I've shot this through has seemed to like it.

6.0gr of W231 under West Coast 230gr Ball works great in my Kimber.

I have tried Power Pistol, Blue Dot and ended up liking W231 the best.

Thanks to the folks here and at my local reloading shop for turning me on to the Winchester powder. ;)

I don't know jack about reloading, but wouldn't you need to know the application to make a recommendation for a load?

I just started reloading, but my pet load so far is a Remington 230gr. FMJ over 7.8/8.0 gr. of Accurate #5 in mixed brass with CCI 300 LPP.

Getting about 820fps out of my Springfield Lightweight Gov't. Model and is scary accurate. Makes me look good.

8g AA#5, CCI Large Pistol Primer, Mixed brass, 1.261-5 OAL (hasn't made a difference for me), either 230g Remington FMJ or 230g Rainer plated.

Works like a champ.

GRD: Good question. A big part of reloading is matching the ammo to the specific weapon. (And there are plenty of folks here who know a lot more about reloading than me who will hopefully chime in.) However, there are a few generalities in reloading. For example, when the 1911 came out, there wasn't a whole lot of ammo to choose from. The ammo companies had to make ammo that was fairly similar in order to function in the gun. And the guns had to be fairly similar to function with the limited amount of ammo available. I suspect that even today, most basic, hardball ammo from the various manufacturers is fairly close in ballistics since manufacturers would want it to work in every brand of 1911. When you deviate from hardball into the realm of swc and Rhino-blasting hollow points, things become quite different and would need to be carefully matched to the firearm. The hardball load I listed has worked well in 1911's from various manufacturers, a Sig P220, a Ruger 345, and a Beretta 8045. That's not to say it would be absolutely the most accurate load on earth for each of those guns. Probably wouldn't be. But it is "accurate" and reliable and isn't so hot as to be dangerous to me or harmful to a firearm. I think most reloaders here would use a recommended load as a starting point - something to fiddle with until it was right for their particular gun.

West Coast plated RN 200gr, 5.1gr Titegroup, 1.260" nominal. Any case, any primer.

Thanks, Murph. I'm going to get into this one of these days...

Well put Murph. I think the old Hardball specs are hard to beat for a balance of accuracy, reliability of feeding, recoil recovery, penetration, and knockdown power. I really dont think there is anything (outside of long range hunting) that the 45 Hardball load cant do "well".

So are these loads for defense?

230gr FMJ
8.3 gr AA#5
1.25 OAL
WLP Primer

This is a very, very accurate load out of my S&W 1911 Target.

So are these loads for defense
I load 200gr Speer Gold Dot over 8.2gr of Power Pistol in +P brass for carry ammo.

Its pushing right at 980 fps out of my 4" Kimber bull barrel.
