Horrible, Horrible Abortion of a Shotgun...

Normally I don't get too upset over sporterized "classic" firearms. But sometimes, something so terrible comes along that it shocks even me...

Under all that, that's an original Winchester 1897.

I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight.

I am going to go hug my Remington 11 and tell her that will NEVER happen to her.

I wouldn't do that even to a Norinco.

Although full marks for the original pistol grip.

To help make the pain go away, here are some cleaned up 1897's from Ned Christiansen:

http://www.louderthanwords.us/smallfoto/picts/ulfls/0807104/17106090971.jpg

The one on the far left has a neat extension fabricated up for it. The one in the middle has a forward sling mount built up that still allows for the take down. Detail picture below.

And one I had cleaned up recently as well:

My first thought was dear god I hope that was a Norc, then I re-read the post again. I just need to get my name out to these people to let them know to sell me the nice old guns before they do anything to them.

DaveM,
i don't know the owner. i saw the gun at chris's house. all the internals are hard chromed (or whatever that guy did) as well. the owner sent it to chris to get it to work. i bet it worked before the owner did anything to it.

To be fair, the owner of the gun is not the person who did the hack job on it. Guy bought it secondhand.

Aside from all the cosmetic damage, the twit who butchered it also screwed around with the sear - so of course, the hammer doesn't stay cocked. It's probably going to need a new sear.

I'm thinking of buying it from the owner just so I can restore it...

I'm not sure which is worse. Having the work done or having the poor taste to buy it is as.

When Chris came home I showed him what had come into the shop. His first words were "We have a winner, no more votes please, the Ugly Gun Contest is offically closed". The poor gun, I fear that when I tear it down I will find ugly is more than skin deep! But with some TLC and a Visa card to Wiesners, I'll give her a new set of innards that should help at least,...well...not much. I aways say that being a smith is like being a midwife, you get to rock the baby first. I guess we have to rock the ugly ones too!

It might be a bit 'ungainly', but it probably WORKS.

Isn't one of the 97's best features it's ability to have the trigger held back and you just keepin' pumpin'?
With that pistolgrip and ghost-ring sights, wouldn't that make it 'uber tactical'?

It SHOULD'VE been painted BLACK!

I give it an 'ugly girl that'll tear ya new one' thumbs UP! :neener:

OK guys:

Now its official. After 20 years in the military, 20 as LEO, and now as a LE/security trainer in sandland, I have cried after looking at an aborted weapon. I can't even get myself to shorten my 30" barrel on one of mine. I now proclaim Winchester 1897 rescue open for business. Please someone get in contact with me, I'll buy it and save it, CPR if necessary.
Please, no more!!!!

My first reaction was, "It's like a lowered Chevy Chevette with a wing on it," but that gun is so much more classic than a Chevette...but I couldn't come up with anything better, because I've been "concepting" all day and my brain is mush.

So just pretend that I had a good analogy. :D

I thought poorly of my dear ol' dad because he flubbed a reblueing of my great-grandpa's M97...then had it parkerized...then traded it for an Italian O/U.

Compared to the cretin responsible for THAT abortion, my dad is a saint.

That's bad, all right. Terrible thing to do to a classic scattergun.

OT Warning:
But it doesn't win the Ugly Gun contest. Couple of years ago one of the pawn shops in town had a 'sporterized' Johnson rifle. You know, the WW2 Garand competitor? This one:

http://www.johnsonautomatics.com/

That was without doubt and with NO competition the UGLIEST gun I ever saw. 'Course, the guy who sold it to them also sold them his "sporterized" M1 Garand too... yech!!

We now return you to your previous topic, already in progress...

The really sad part? I bet all of those mods went over $1k. Too much money, not enough sense. The Christansen guns, on the other hand, are pretty snazzy.

  2 people need to really have their heads examined because of this. One is the person that thought it up and wanted this done to such a classic firearm. The second is the gunsm, ith that agreed to do the work. C'mon now, is any 'smith THAT desperate for a few bucks that they'd destroy that gun. Both of these peoplereally, really need a good behind the barn beating for this atrocity. :cuss:
